After this the U.S. government decided to force the Cheyenne to sign a new treaty for felting most of their land, instead of just removing the unlawful setters. Even Though the Sand Creek reservation was inhabit, they were not able to plant their own crops or get near any buffalo. Black Kettle was afraid of what would happen if they refused to accept. As soon as the lack of food begun the young male Indians started to rail settlers and wagon trains. Soon after it became the spring of 1864 when the Native American Indians were attacked by the Colorado militia. Even though Black Kettle knew the civil war was going on with the whites he didn’t want to take any chances, so in order to protect his Indian tribes he went to Fort Weed Colorado where he was promised that they would be kept safe if they stayed only on Sand Creek reservation. However, Colonel John Chivington attacked the Sand Creek reservation but with luck the black kettle and his wife had survived. After being moved to another reservation the Black Kettle signed the Medicine Lodge Treaty of 1864. The treaty helped to more his people into smaller reservations in Oklahoma.
