There are many reasonable explanations for both opinions. But in my eyes, there are many more reasons on why the mentally ill should be criminally charged. The mentally ill who commit crimes are a danger to society, just like any other criminal. Even if they do receive treatment which I think they should, I and many others believe that they will never truly be mentally stable and cannot be discharged, especially after a serious crime. Most situations where a person who suffers from a mental illness commits a crime they know what they were doing was wrong. Therefore they committed a crime and cannot blame their mental illness, the mental illness may have contributed to what they’ve done but as a whole it was not the only thing at fault for the crime. They need to be criminally charged. If this world allowed every mentally ill person who commits crimes without consequences and only treatment, this world would not be safe.
