Unit 9 Final Project CJ100:Preparing For A Career In Public Saftey Ken Balduf

I believe as I reflect on the things that we went through in the course and the other things I’ve researched on the internet there were a lot of different populations that the criminal justice system serves. One thing that I have seen is a need to fix the overcrowding in most of the prisons and jails in the United States. There seems to be to many misdemeanor and non-violent crimes in the corrections division of the prison system. We need to focus on more of violent crimes and figure out what to do with the non-violent crimes. By no means should any crime go unpunished but we have to as a group of professionals figure this out and how to deal with it. Another issue that the criminal justice system needs to address is the homeless population that seems to endlessly flow through the system. There are 610,000 homeless people in the United States on any given day. The cost of housing these non-violent criminals are skyrocketing to the tax payers of this country I once again think the courts need to do a better job at dealing with these types of people. Last but not least mental illness is another population that the criminal justice system serves. Probably one of the more troubling aspects of the criminal justice system has to deal with. It seems that these people just seem to fall through the cracks of the system.

Dealing with or addressing the needs of these populations seems to be a never ending process. I really don’t believe that the department of corrections has really too much to do with addressing the problems of the populations they serve. They pretty much can only watch over and provide so much assistance to these people. My personal opinion is that we have over zealous prosecutors that just want convictions and don’t really care what happens to the people they convict. I have done some research and have found on the U.S. Department of Justice website that

There has been a magnificent discovery in Bethel, New York at the historic site of the Woodstock music festival in 1969. We have found a time capsule with a treasure trove of items that seem to remarkably symbolize the 1960’s as a whole. The items found in the capsule consist of: a piece of the Berlin wall, an article referencing the end of the Cuban missile crisis, another picture of the JFK assassination, a protest sign from the 1963 March on Washington, and an autographed picture of Neil Armstrong on the moon.…

The problem that our product intends to solve is keeping people’s food and beverages the temperature they want on the go. Hot food can go cold and cold food can get too hot, forcing people to quickly find a fridge or microwave to heat or warm up their foods. Even then, things can go wrong, such as food going bad such as mayonnaise, and ice cream melting to a liquid. The lunchboxes of today are pretty much exactly the same as they would have been 50 years ago, with no major advancements in a food carrying case which is so widespread for people to bring in food from home. Our product will change the game on how people carry their lunches, especially in the winter and summer months. Our battery powered composite heater and refrigeration system will allow people’s lunches to be conveniently heated or cooled. It will even make it possible to bring ice cream from home.…

The Adam Foss's video lecture was informative. I was impressed how his desire for prestige and power had changed because he realized that his decision as a young prosecutor could damage a person for life. However, I agree with him in his point of view that the Criminal Justice System needs to be reform by providing resources to help in understanding why and what gave the defendant the mindset to engage in criminal activities. Nevertheless, our prison system is not equipped to create a productive system because of its negative environment only just remake some of them into a career criminal. This is what I have seen and had many inmates to share with me during my assessment interview. Therefore, as Mr. Foss has stated if the Criminal Justice…

When I did my research on Hmong people in unit six I found their history and culture to be very interesting, that is why I choose the conflict of the Hmong people and the Vietnam War to do this project on. Before getting into the exact conflict and the harm that the war caused many Hmong people I am going to write about the Hmong culture. http://www.historyguy.com/hmong_rebellion_in_laos.html#.UYxyE6JnG8g The Hmong are ethnically different from the Vietnamese, Cambodians and Lowland Lao. They lived in the mountains between Laos and Vietnam. They were considered less “civilized” than the other ethnic groups mentioned. They were considered to be Semi-Nomadic because they practiced the slash-and-burn as their way of getting food. Before the French came and made Indochina a Colony the Hmong were persecuted for their way of life, after that they were left alone and not bothered by the other groups. During the Indochina War (1946-1954) the Hmong people supported the French because they protected them. When the French pulled out they left the Hmong people to survive on their own, little did they know that this would not be the last time this would happen to them.…

The corrections system in the United States is an ongoing struggle to house and rehabilitate individuals who violate the law. The resources put towards the United States correctional system is substantial but not sufficient. The United States continues to have a rising number of inmates incarcerated and in turn often times face overcrowding issues and shortage of funds to provide other rehabilitation focused classes and programs. The corrections system in the United States has proven to show trends throughout the years since the corrections system was established. In order for the corrections system to improve, it must be analyzed and changed…

The United States has the largest prison population of any western developed country. The United States has almost 700 people per 100,000 in prison. As a result of this large prison population 600,000 people are released from prison every year. Currently more than fifty percent of parolee’s become incarcerated again. As a nation we must provide the services to help them return to society in a successful way (White House Fact Sheet). Services need to be offered while in prison and after their release from prison. Offering counseling and rehabilitation while in prison and continuing to assist them once they are no longer incarcerated. If these services were well funded and given to all prisoners the nation would see an immediate decrease…

    Justice System Failing

Senator Jim Webb writes in Clear and Frost’s article, “ America’s Criminal Justice System has deteriorated to the point that it is a national disgrace.” And that is the truth. The criminal justice system has many flaws that need to be fixed. There are several issues that need to be handled and dealt with properly. Tweaks need to be made to ensure that criminals are sentenced properly. But the way that criminals are picked out and failed by the system is preposterous. Although the Justice System establishes rules and makes sense out of chaos, the justice system needs reform because 25% of the nation is incarcerated, there are more drug users than murderers or serial offenders, and there are private prisons that…

“I am convinced that imprisonment is a way of pretending to solve the problem of crime. It does nothing for the victims of crime, but perpetuates the idea of retribution, thus maintaining the endless cycle of violence in our culture. It is a cruel and useless substitute for the elimination of those conditions--poverty, unemployment, homelessness, desperation, racism, and greed--which are at the root of most punished crime. The crimes of the rich and powerful go mostly unpunished.” (Howard Zinn) This quote simplifies my evolved awareness of the issue concerning crime and the criminal justice system has grown. Beginning this unit I had a basic…

In conclusion, many problems stem from mental health illness when brought against the criminal justice system. Mental health illness can contribute to jail and prison overcrowding, high crime rates, drug addiction, and many other problems. After the wide deinstitutionalization of state hospitals, jails and prisons have seen an increase in the number and percentage of individuals with mental health and substance use. Furthermore,…

    Correctional System

Budget issues in today’s tight economy are a constant source of pressure on correctional agencies who must find new ways to accomplish their mission. Budget pressures have forced some states to delay opening new facilities because of their inability to afford to hire staff. In other cases, fiscal cutbacks have caused the closure of correctional facilities that have operated for years under the assumption that with the growing prison population they would never be shut down. Budget cuts also make prisons more dangerous. Many needed programs, such as mental health services and rehabilitation programs, are often eliminated due to lack of funding. Additional staff members are sometimes needed to deal with inmate violence, but there is no money for overtime. Inadequate budgets also lead to overcrowding when additional beds are needed to handle the growing number of inmates. Alternatives have been suggested, such as sentencing reforms that allow the release of prisoners who commit nonviolent crimes in order to avoid the expense of supporting them. While this may seem like a plausible solution, it may actually do more harm than good. Many of those inmates who are released back into society without proper rehabilitation will only continue to commit more crimes. Also, with no fear of incarceration, they have no incentive to stay out of trouble, so other alternatives must be found.…

    Overcrowded Prisons

Prisons become overcrowded due to the failure in rehabilitation programs. Programs to help out minor offenders for crimes like small drug offenses should be established. Those who commit minor offenses do not need to go to jail. They should be able to get help through enforced rehab programs that keep them from becoming hard core criminals. However, there are not enough programs available out there. That is why the criminal justice system is enforcing with harshness the crimes that small drug offenders do and sending them straight to prison. In today’s society, there are still issues with overcrowded jails. However, those involved in the criminal justice system are trying to figure out a way to resolve the issue.…
