Most people think that the Zika virus is a new virus that has just struck people out of nowhere, when in fact it has been around for nearly 70 years. The Zika virus was first discovered by a group of scientist in 1947, in east africa. Stated in ‘’Zika virus for Essential Hospitals’’, Zika virus, named for its East Africa point of origin, a Ugandan forest, was first identified in 1947 and did not appear in humans until 1952 (‘’Zika Virus’’8). This helps you to grasp a better understanding on how the Zika Virus is not a new virus, but just an old one bringing forth a new threat.
The Zika virus was never studied in depth when it was first discovered in 1947, because it was not a big enough threat to people, so they never raised funds …show more content…
to accommodate for research. That was until the 2015 outbreak in brazil, since the outbreak the virus has infected more than 1 million people all over the world. In ‘’Ebola and Zika are new threats, not new viruses’’ Jessica Firger tells us, ‘’In both instances, scientists were intrigued, but the need to study each independently wasn't urgent enough to merit sufficient funding’’ (Firger). This means that scientists never had a important enough reason to thoroughly research the Zika virus, until the past year.
A great concern of medical researchers, has to do with the Zika virus potentially causing harmful birth defects.
The virus causes two known birth defects, the first defect is known as microcephaly, which cause a irregularly small head at birth. The second defect is known as Guillain Barre syndrome, which is a condition in which the immune system attacks the nerves (‘’Zika virus’’8). This gives researchers a very important reason to put funding into researching the Zika virus.
The Zika virus is transmitted through the bite of an infected Aedes species mosquito. This brings a big threat into our lives, as we are in areas that consist of mosquitos frequently. Its most common symptoms are fever, rash, joint pain, and conjunctivitis: generally are mild and last from a few days to a week (‘’Zika virus’’8). With the Zika virus spreading like wildfire from mosquito to human, we have to be more onboard with promoting bug spray to protect against the bite of mosquitos.
Another concern of medical researchers, is the scare that the Zika virus may be able to be transferred from person to person, through bodily fluids, and maybe even sexual contact. It is not medically proven just yet (‘’Zika virus’’). With that it is crucial for researchers to find a vaccine, because people are sexually active every
day.
The Zika virus i making a huge impact on the economy. 1.8 billion alone was requested of congress by president obama, for emergency funding. Another 1.48 billion will be spent to support the Department of Health and Human Services. 50-laboratory confirmed cases of the Zika virus have been confirmed among U.S. travelers by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention between Dec.2015 and Feb 5, 2016 (‘’Faststats’’6). This is why so much is being spent on emergency funding, and to support the Department of Health and Human Services.
The crucial thot is that the mosquito that carries the Zika virus, is found in more than 5,000 countries in Brazil. Hundreds and even thousand of people are being infected and killed by the Zika virus in the country of Brazil. This was one of the biggest outbreaks of the Zika virus that has ever occurred. And because researchers never had an important enough reason back in 1947, to really put the time, money, and research, into the virus, they never came up with a cure making it more crucial than ever for scientists to put the funds and time into researching the virus. The Zika virus is often mistaken for three other viruses, Yellow fever, Dengue, and West Nile. The Zika virus is mistaken most for Dengue Fever, a mosquito-born viral disease accuring in tropical and subtropical areas. "We collected more than 500 samples, and we insisted that it was not dengue, that it was something urgent and new," says Luz. After ruling out other options, the two experts concluded it had to be Zika’’ (Braga). With knowledge of this, medical scientists can be more precise when they diagnose a person.
More and more people are looking for ways to prevent the Zika virus. Reasons for prevention of the Zika virus, is to keep people from getting the virus in the long run. Some ways of prevention of the virus, would be first to wear bug spray whenever in an area with known mosquito inhabitance, second stay out of wood/brushy area unless absolutely necessary, and third if you do find yourself having to be in the woods/brushy areas to make sure you wear boots/shoes, pants, and longsleeves.
The biggest concern for medical researchers is to find a cure for the Zika virus. So far 200 million will be used to fund vaccine research and diagnostics. ‘’Speaking of prophylactics-perhaps the real panacea would be a vaccine (Braga). Developers of the Dengue virus are working hard with other medical researchers to develop a vaccine/cure.
By the end of 2016 millions of americans may be infected with the Zika virus. The virus is spreading like wildfire, causing fear in the lives of people all over the world. ‘’The World Health Organization (WHO) has warned that the disease is "spreading explosively" in the Americas and could infect as many as 4 million people by the end of 2016. Based on this estimate, WHO declared a public health emergency Feb. 1.’’ (‘’Zika virus’’8). This is why it is so important for people everywhere to work on prevention of the Zika virus, and for medical researchers everywhere to put plenty of funds and time into creating a vaccine/cure for the Zika virus.
