Microcephaly Essay
Microcephaly
The most common and severe congenital anomalies are heart defects, neural tube defects, and down syndrome (WHO, 2015); but within 2016, microcephaly has been becoming an occurring topic of interest due to its possible association with the Zika-Virus disease. This has remained a lingering factor of concern towards women who live in the affected high risk areas (Galán-Huerta, ET. AL, 2016). Microcephaly is a chronic disorder that occurs in the prenatal stage and is found within 32 weeks of pregnancy. It is characterized as a condition resulting in a non-degenerative, abnormal forehead circumference smaller than four standard deviations of the average circumference. Although microcephaly does result in present head deformities, there

New research has shown a possible association with congenital infection due to as well Zika-Virus (Galán-Huerta, Et. Al, 2016). The majority of women who are at risk of contracting the Zika-Virus live in the following indicated high risk areas: Brazil, Cabo Verde, Colombia, French Polynesia, Martinique, and Panama (where the virus lives in mosquitoes that are natural to that environment). There is no vaccination due to it being a viral infection, but there are preventive measures that have been implemented. These measures are common measures of protection against vectors which include protective clothing with limited skin exposure, the use of repellent, and water that is free of mosquito colonies. It also calls for the use of protected sex to prevent viral passage and pregnancy (Galán-Huerta, ET. AL, 2016). Although these measures sound simple, but they are commonly out of the reach for those who are of low income (which is common in the above countries listed) who do not have access to regulated water, repellent, and protective clothing, putting them at most risk of contracting a viral disease such as the Zika-Virus (WHO,

Spina bifida, means “cleft spine”. It is characterized by the partial development of the brain, spinal cord, and/or meninges (the protective covering around the brain and spinal cord). Spina bifida comes from Latin and literally means "split" or "open" spine. Spina bifida occurs at the end of the first month of pregnancy when the two sides of the embryo's spine fail to join together, leaving an open area. In some cases, the spinal cord or other membranes may push through this opening in the back. The condition usually is detected before a baby is born and treated right away.…

Myelomeningocele is a neural tube defect in which the spine does not form or close properly; this results in the spine, and the tissues protecting the spine, to protrude from the back. Sometimes there is a fluid filled sac on the baby’s back. Occasionally this sac will burst open in labor causing baby’s spine and nerves to be exposed. Surgery will be required within the first few days of birth to repair the hole. In many cases, the child will also need a shunt due to hydrocephalus. Hydrocephalus is an undue accumulation of cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) in the brain, which occurs when there is excessive production of the CSF or when the fluid is not circulated and absorbed properly. Although hydrocephalus may occur otherwise, it is most commonly associated with spina…

One of the main ethical concerns of the Zika virus has to do with the people. Of the articles I read, the ethical concerns have to do with religious beliefs and honesty of the general public involved. Since many of the health care professionals recommend mothers to be on a steady form of birth control if they are planning to travel anywhere that will have a chance of catching the Zika virus, it conflicts with some people’s beliefs. For example, a woman going on birth control is directly against the Catholic Church belief. This raises ethical concerns amongst a large portion of the population since so many people are Catholic in the world. Another point that raises ethical concern is the honesty of the public. As an example, if someone is asked…

In particular young children and pregnant women are more at risk for contracting malaria. Young children have not built up or acquired immunity to the disease and without immunity infections are more severe and life threatening (The World Health Organization Staff, 2010). “More than 40% of the world’s children live in places where malaria is a constant threat. Most children die from malaria because they do not get effective treatment” (Episcopal Relief and Development Staff, 2009). Pregnant women have compromised immune systems due to the pregnancy leaving them at…

Occupational therapists intervene in the lives of individuals who are physically and mentally incapable of performing daily routines. Occupational therapists treat individuals with a variety of disorders including cerebral palsy. Cerebral palsy is one of the more serious disorders occupational therapists have to come across in their careers. In actuality, cerebral palsy refers to a group of disorders and is prominent in children, “Cerebral palsy is a blanket term that refers to a group of disorders that affect a child’s ability to move and maintain balance and posture and is the most common motor disability in childhood” (Anonymous). The McGill website states “If each hemisphere were unfolded, it would be the size of an extra-large pizza! For this reason, the brain must fold over on itself many times to fit into the skull (McGill “The Brain”). When a website used for academics, compares my brain to pizza I I’m Interested! Can a giant network of neurons make us who we are? The brain is one of the most complex organ of the human body. Many people over time have explored and tried to examine and explain the functions of the brain. Many people have an idea, but most still do not understand. We have read about some of the scientists and experiments they have done including Pierre Florenens, Eduard Hitzig, and VS Ramachandran.…

Microcephaly is a rare disease that is noticeable immediately at birth, and in some cases it is noticeable before birth. Microcephaly also is a rare, neurological disorder in which the circumference of a child’s head is smaller than other children for the age and gender of the infant or child. With microcephaly, the brain is not able to develop properly, or in some cases does not grow at all, this all happens when the baby is in the womb. Microcephaly also makes the head smaller than it normally is. This disease is so rare that it only affects one in every 666,666 in the United States. Those who have microcephaly are usually mentally retarded and will have problems with hyperactivity, dwarfism, seizures, balance, speech and motor problems, as well as others. The child’s head can not be treated to become a normal shape or size but the treatments focus on ways to decrease the impact of the deformities and neurological disabilities. Microcephaly can happen to a child from either a genetic disorder or by the mother abusing certain substances. These substances include drugs, alcohol, or exposure to radiation. Microcephaly can be diagnosed by head circumference, x-ray, computed tomography scan, also called a CT or a CAT scan, magnetic resonance imaging, MRI, blood tests, or urine tests. The over all amount of the problem is usually not totally understood immediately after birth, but most likely revealed as the child grows and becomes an adult. Over all microcephaly is a disease that affects a child for the rest of his/her life.…

Inside our brain, there is this system called the human nervous system. There are two types of nervous systems: the peripheral and central nervous systems. The peripheral nervous system includes the nerves connecting the central nervous system to the rest of the body. It has two subdivisions: somatic nervous system and autonomic nervous system. Somatic nervous system controls skeletal muscles and interacts with the external environment. An example is walking through a park. You are using your motor nerves, which relay messages from the central nervous system, to all the skeletal muscles of your body. The autonomic nervous system regulates the body’s internal environment, which consists of organs, glands, and blood vessels. An example is breathing.…
