Da Vinci once said, “the greatest deception men suffer is from their own opinions” (“Leonardo da Vinci Quotes” 1). The play Othello is written by William Shakespeare. Shakespeare’s Othello takes place in Venice and the island of Cyprus. Othello, a Moor and Venetian general marries Desdemona. Othello then hires Cassio, a young, man as his new lieutenant. Iago, Othello’s old lieutenant is incensed because he is replaced. Iago then manipulates Roderigo, a young, foolish man. Iago tricks and steals all of his money. Iago persuades Roderigo to partner with him to betray Cassio and make him loose his position as Othello’s lieutenant. Iago then manipulates Cassio and Othello by telling Othello that Cassio has been having a affair with Desdemona, Othello’s wife. Othello believes Iago, and makes a plan to get Cassio killed and he as well kills Desdemona. Once they are both dead, Othello finds out Desdemona never cheated on him and through grief he kills himself. Iago is a tyrant throughout the story. Iago manipulates Roderigo, Cassio and Othello in the play.
At the beginning of the play, Iago manipulates Roderigo. Iago is sent to Cyprus to help aid defense against the Turkish fleet. Roderigo, a foolish Venetian joins Iago and brings a lot of money. Roderigo pays Iago to get an audience with Desdemona. Roderigo then finds out Desdemona has married Othello, a general that Iago is incensed with because he hired another lieutenant over him. Iago tells Roderigo that he hates Othello, and they make plans to undermine Othello. Iago says, “Thou art sure of me. Go make money. I have told thee often, and I re-tell thee again and again, I hate the moor. My cause is hearted: thine hath no less reason. Let us be conjunctive in our revenge against him” (1.3.235).
