Period 1 Language Arts Persuasive Essay
Every school day, at least 100,000 students bring guns to school, 160,000 students skip classes because they fear physical harm, and 6,250 teachers are threatened with bodily injury. At one time school was considered to be the second safest place to be beside the home. Unfortunately, the situation is much different in the 21st century. President Ronald Reagan first made school safety an issue in a 1984 radio address pointing out that violence in schools negatively affects learning and teaching. After many school shootings in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s most schools began increasing security. One method of surveillance that many schools have adopted to increase school safety is surveillance cameras. I strongly agree that cameras should be installed in the schools; students and staff will not have to worry about intruders, there will be a reduction in property damages such as vandalism and theft, and students’ behavior will improve because of monitoring.
One of the advantages to have video cameras on the school property is peace of mind for students and staff. Security experts and administrators who use the cameras say students and teachers seem to appreciate the increased sense of security. This is one important tool that schools use in response to recent highly-publicized incidents of violence in the schools. Students and staff feel safer knowing that perpetrators will be scared off by the presence of cameras before committing an offense. For instance, if there is an intruder in the school, no one has to worry because people in the office will be looking at what the cameras are recording and they will spring into action.
