We have identified three essential skills that managers would require to perform their job effectively. The skills are Conceptual Skills, Human Skills and Technical Skills.
Conceptual skills refer to the manager’s aptitude have an overview perspective of the organisation. The skill requires managers to understand the impact a function has towards the organisation holistically and to be able to distinguish the organisation’s role towards various segments of the external environment such as the corporate and social environment (Lim, Chua, Usa, & Richard, 2015).

Giri Krishnan, a Logistics Manager from NNR Global Logistics will not lose his temper when an employee makes any mistake be it in the packing process or even if goods are shipped to the wrong destination. Instead, he will work together with his employees to resolve the issue first. After the problems are solved, he would discuss the cause of the mistake and seek to find solutions together as a team. He will set separate discussions and negotiations with other parties if it’s required to reduce the possibility of mistakes recurring in the future.
Technical skills are managers’ ability to be knowledgeable in specific techniques and/or employ the use of certain tools to solve problems within a job function such as Information Technology (IT), Finance or Architecture (Lim, Chua, Usa, & Richard, 2015).
For example, Mr. Fabian Goh, an IT manager in NNR Global Logistics. Information Technology (IT) is his specific area of expertise which not many employees in the company would have except for his subordinates who are within his team. He together with his team would facilitate the organisation in the field of IT support. Their team would employ their troubleshooting skills on any issues that are IT-related faced by any employees’ computer systems. A policy is wide in scope and serves as a general guideline on how an employee should conduct themselves at workplace. It is often based upon the organisation’s strategic plan. Some of the policies John Tan should consider presenting includes; policies governing the use of internet and email, sexual harassment policies and information sharing policies which outlines what are the information related to the company that should never be made public.
Rules are narrower in scope are meant to define how an action is performed for a specific situation. Some of the rules that John Tan may consider are; the lunch and tea-breaks time for the employees and disciplinary actions required for defiant employees.
Procedures are more refined in nature. Often being recognised as Standard Operating Procedure, it is often related to the job scope of the employee. Some of the work procedures John Tan could consider includes order fulfilment procedures which refers to the complete process from the point of sales inquiry to the delivery of product to the customer, procedures that involves managing customers’ enquiry or complaints and billing
