Women 's Rights Organizations
For many years, throughout history women have fought hard political battles to win rights that men possessed automatically because of their gender. Since the early times women have been viewed as inferior and have had fewer opportunities. Today most women have gained legal rights throughout the world like the right to vote. American Women have made many strides in gaining rights and equality; however we still face some concern for women’s equality especially in the workforce.
The Women’s Rights Organizations in the United States covers many years. The first gathering devoted to women’s rights in the United …show more content…
States was in 1848, when the first Women’s Rights Convention took place in upstate New York. In 1903 the National Women’s Trade Union League is established, improving working conditions and wages for women. The Women 's Trade Union League, was an institution in reforming women 's working conditions in the early 20th century. A lot of the major suffrage organizations were brought together with the goal of an amendment. In 1917, New York took on woman suffrage, when President Wilson changed his opinion on supporting an amendment in 1918, the politically things began to change.
There is a Title VII of the Civil Rights Act, which stipulates that no one should be discriminated against based off or race, color, origin, religion, or sex. Women were able to work in environments with men that were less compromising for them and more rewarding. In, 1920 suffrage for women was granted, and it appeared that women would finally be equal to man. Today, women are able to have prestigious titles as executive officers, become Governors, and so on. Progress has finally been made in the last 50 years towards equality for women in American to hold positions that years ago would not have been remotely possible for women to obtain. This has become a huge accomplishment for women, not only for the empowerment we receive with it, but the overall statement of how much women can contribute with their opinions, thoughts, and overall femininity.
The Women’s Rights Convention had been viewed as the beginning of women struggling to overcome the obstacle of not being able to obtain work that men would typically do.
“In the United States, as with many other industrial nations, women are increasingly participating in the labor workforce by either working or seeking employment.” (Schaefer, R. T. (2012). After all these years women are still struggling with equality, but with these organizations and the help of laws being passed women now have a chance. Women have been known for the slave to the working man therefore needing no existence in the work place. Introducing gender equality in the workplace will make for a better economy. When women became equal to man in the workplace there was better communication between management and coworkers, increased productivity, and reduction in salary gaps. Women are advancing quickly showing America that they can accomplish just as much and if not better accomplishments. “Many individual women hold positions involving high levels of responsibility and competence but may not be accorded the same respect as man.” (Schaefer, R. A major obstacle for women in the workplace is sexual harassment from their male counterparts.
I have been a victim of sexual harassment in the workplace. I had experienced degrading comments and physical actions from a male supervisor. After enduring the disrespect and humiliation I protected myself and took action. I did not want to feel like I did not have a voice, let alone a man make me disrespected and inferior to him. I ultimately did not receive the results I wanted; because he was a superior in the company they felt it was just a miscommunication, so nothing was done. I remained at the company regardless of the outcome. In the end I felt empowered that I am a woman, I was able to be strong and stand for what I thought was right for me and for other women in the company. “Under evolving legal standards, sexual harassment is recognized as any unwanted and unwelcome sexual advances that interfere with a person’s ability to perform a job and enjoy the benefits of a job.” (Schaefer, R. T. (2012) “Despite these rulings, it is very difficult legally and emotionally for a person to bring forward a case of sexual harassment (Domino, 1995, Roscigno and Schimdt, 2007). (Schaefer, R. T. (2012)
Large scale organizations like National Organization for Women work for women’s rights. NOW was founded in 1966 and have become the largest women’s advocacy groups in America. There are similar groups like NOW that include, the Ms. Foundation for Women and National Council of
Women’s Organizations (NCWO) help women with understanding the rights that they are entitled to as a woman. It has been a tough fight for women, but with the help of these organizations, we are getting closer to the picture of women being seen as equal to man.
Women’s Rights Organizations impact women young and old. Without these organizations trying to improve the constitutional right for women to be equal as man in the workforce, women will continue to be degraded and disrespected. Women organizations give women the power and support to stand up for what is right. If women are able to contribute to an organization just as well as a man than why not they be recognized for it. Women have been underestimated for far too long, it is time that we are recognized for our equal contributions in society. "We’ve waited long enough," said [Barbara Boxer], a California Democrat. ““All these years later, there’s no excuse for not ratifying this critical convention to shine a light on women’s rights around the world.” Press, A. (2009, Mar 08).
I have discussed Women’s Rights Organizations, how they are important to America. How women have been viewed in the work place and the obstacles they face. How the Women’s Organizations and laws passed have helped ensure equality for women, even though there is still much need for improvement.
