Ethan Frome Outline Essay
IB Outline – Ethan Frome
I. Bibliography
Wharton, Edith. Ethan Frome and Selected Stories. New York: Barnes and Noble Classics, 2004. Print.
II. Character List
1. Ethan Frome – Ethan, the head of the Frome household, is first seen by the narrator to be a stiff/stern man who looks as if he is quite saddened. Ethan carries a limp and bears a scar on his face. As the narrator learns about Ethan’s past through various stories, he sees that young Ethan is quite the antithesis of the old Ethan. This young Ethan is portrayed as a man full of intelligence, strength, and optimism. Though he has an engineering degree and a healthy physique – which is widely sought for at the time of the novel – Ethan is stuck in Starkfield because of his sick

Topic – Determinism
b. Theme – The lives of individuals are controlled by outside sources out of their control
i. Quote 1: “The inexorable facts closed in on him like prison-warders handcuffing a convict. There was no way out –none. He was a prisoner for life, and now his one ray of light was to be extinguished (Wharton 74) – This quote shows determinism as Ethan has no control over any escape routes. If he left Zeena and fled, there would be no one to support Zeena, or even himself (as he does not have money). Ethan is controlled by his environment and his poverty and is unable to escape the situation. ii. Quote 2: “Most of the smart ones get away … Somebody had to stay and care for the folks. There warn’t ever anybody but Ethan.” (Wharton 9) – This quote shows the reason as to why he is in Starkfield and not out studying. Due to an outside force, being his sick father, he had to come back to care for his family. And as soon as his father and mother died, Zeena came and became the controlling force. iii. Quote 3: “Harmon chuckled sardonically. ‘That’s so. He had to stay then.” [Talking about the smash-up] – After his failed suicide attempt, which was his only way out of his problems, Ethan had to stay in Starkfield as his injuries prevented him from leaving. The outside force in this situation would be the injuries, preventing him from leaving and living with

When Eric was younger his dad left him. Eric talks about in beginning of the story about how his dad left him and his mom when he was very young and how he hasn’t seen or talked to him since then. Eric having no dad to be his role model or to be someone he can look up to has affected his life and made him a troubled person. Eric’s best and only real friend Sarah is in the hospital. Eric visits Sarah in the hospital many times, but she refuses to talk and as we read we figure out that she’s not talking because she knows if she does she will be kicked out of the hospital because they will think she cured. This makes Eric a troubled person because now he doesn’t really have a friend and he is worried for her and at first he doesn’t know why she is talking so this would make him more worried for her. Another reason Eric is a troubled character is because he is being chased by Virgil Byrnes, Sarah’s abusive father, Virgil is chasing Eric because Eric know the truth about what happened to Sarah’s face and wants her to get justice but Virgil wants to keep it quiet so he doesn’t have to go to jail. This makes him troubled because Sarah’s dad wants to hurt him. He can’t do much of anything to stop him so he has to remain fearing for his life. This shows that the author Chris Crutcher has made Eric a troubled…

Edith Wharton quite deliberately brings together human emotion and the environment in her novella Ethan Frome. The characters are circumscribed by the environment in which they exist and the impossibility of escape from the environmental forces of nature, heredity and place shape the characters of the text. A moment of hope arises as Mattie and Ethan walk home together from the dance and a more romantic sense of possibility emerges. The reader is drawn to the love of Ethan and Mattie quite subtly – it grows almost organically from innocent moments shared and this is perhaps why the reader does not see their ‘affair’ as adulterous. We share the hope that glimmers in the bleak cold that is Starkfield and its characters.…

The bleak, snow filled landscape, is a factor in many internal conflicts. The wintry imagery is so overwhelming and oppressive, as snow, ice, and cold are constantly being used to describe the setting. One characteristic of Ethan is that he is indecisive. Throughout the book, he will begin to attempt what he wants, but will not follow through with it. This can be tied back to the bleak and oppressive setting, in which Ethan’s desires are suppressed, due to the fact that the coldness and stark features of the town drain the energy out of people, including Ethan. This constant conflict between what he wants, versus what he believe is ethical or possible, is one example of an internal conflict.…

Do people need other people to live a joyful life? In Edith Wharton’s novella, Ethan Frome, many themes are expressed through the landscape and characters, but one recurring theme is “people need people”. Wharton used three main characters to elaborate on this theme. She created an epic love-triangle that is doomed from the beginning. The three came together because of each other's needs. Ethan and Zeena Frome are married. Zeena is a hypochondriac who is need of a caretaker. Mattie Silver, Zeena’s cousin, fills this role. On top of being a caretaker, she caught the attention of Ethan. Ethan’s lack of agency, the ability to act is first evident at the beginning of the novel. He is unable to continue on his career path to become an engineer because he must stay behind and care for his parents. His misery at the situation is obvious. It was as if he carried the pain of his life along with him. “ A lameness checking each step like the jerk of a chain. There was something bleak and unapproachable in his face, and he was so stiffened and grizzled that I took him for an old man and was surprised to hear that he was not more then fifty-two” (Wharton 3). Ethan was unable to exceed his moral obligations and instead he was forced to remain in Starkfield. “Most of the smart ones get away. But if that were the case, how could any combination of obstacles have hindered the flight of a man like Ethan Frome” (Wharton 7)? It was evident to all members of that Starkfield community that Ethan’s potential went above and beyond what could be offered for him in Starkfield. But once again Ethan was unable to determine where his loyalty lied, to himself. Ethan quickly ended his schooling and went to run the family farm and mill because he felt that it was his responsibility. In an unsuccessful attempt to escape silence, isolation, and loneliness Ethan proposes to the nurse of his sick mother…

Many people search for the freedom and carefree sense of character that Henry had before.
