Ethical Dilema
Ethical Dilemas and decisions are placed in our lives everyday, it can be as simple as deciding wether to go somewhere or it can be as difficult as involving someones life. Dilemas in general bring on stress and frustration to society now imagine something to do with your feelings, beliefs and standards, the way you live and how you wish to continue living. I will be discussing an ethical dilemma that a family in Texas had to endure due to laws, which led to a very sad and painful ending. Having no choice but to follow the law made them live the most horrible week of their life and has traumatized them and broken their ethics they had in themselves and in their family. In Texas there was a very happy, playful 19 month old Natalie Newton. Unfortunately in an accident she happened to stumble into the backyard pool. Even though she was revived she had suffered a traumatic brain injury and was left blind, deaf, experiencing seizures and paralyzed. The doctors didn't give her long to live she had a 4 percent chance of survival. In Texas, the End of Life recommendation was given. This meant that Natalie would have to be removed from her feeding tube and starve to her death. Natalie’s family obviously was devastated having no choice but to do as the hospital stated since there was no other choice. In truth I don't believe no ethical decision was made, Texas law prohibits euthanasia. The Newton family in reality had no choice but to follow the law even if it was against their morals and ethic beliefs. However the traumatic experience that not only Natalie’s family had to endure but the then 21 month old little girl who had to suffer for 9 days until she was too weak out of starvation to survive. The family had to watch as their little girl deteriorated of strength and weakness and out of hunger because as they described it a “barbaric law,” that made Natalie suffer 9
