Prior responding to the case study questions, I would like to mention two points that relates with employee’s unethical behaviour in an organization.
The first is one is, the role of leaders in influencing unethical behaviour in the workplace. In most cases, employee did unethical act for the following reasons: due to lack of motivation, while falling in to ethical dilemma, and when they are under frustration…etc.
When we discuss about unethical act, always it is directly related to an employee’s behaviour. In this scenario, Gary thought about recommending clients, because he was disappointed for not being selected. This implies that this action done deliberately for gaining something in reward.
3. What action should Wendy take with Gary? With other department employees?
Wendy, need to take the necessary action as per the company code of conduct.
In the event, the is nothing written clearly pertaining the current issue in the code of conduct, then this need to be addressed either to HR or to the Corporate office to make the necessary change in the code of conduct or to give refresher to all employee about it.
4. Is there anything the city manager might do to prohibit this type of behaviour?
Yes, the city manager can prohibit this type of behaviour in the following ways:
a. By convincing Gary why he was not selected, and to further explain to him that not being selected it doesn’t mean that he is not good performer, however, there might be future openings that suits his experience and
