of life they want to lead and for them, this means that they want to from a school district that is separate from the Baton Rouge school district. The people that are pushing for the split of this city and school district are prioritizing the interest of themselves and their children.
The people who are fighting against the formation of the new school district belief is based on the ethical standards of the common good and utilitarian approaches.
With the utilitarian approach, they advocate for the ethical action that will provide the best or the least harm, which they see as keeping the school district together. If Baton Rouge is split up, it would be a division based on income which would end up hurting the young students that are left in Baton Rouge because they would have fewer tax dollars spent on their education. They reached their decisions based on the concept that the school district would be stronger if it stayed together and it would benefit most of the students. If the school district stayed together then there would be interlocking relationships from different cultures and lifestyles that allow the students to strive to live out their goals. The common good approach emphasizes the compassion and respect for every including the vulnerability that is needed when making decisions. If the school district was to split it would give a disadvantage to the already vulnerable lower class because they would not be included in the more affluent new district. The interest they are prioritizing are the students that would be left in the Baton Rouge district if the split was to occur. students.
Personally, I feel that the Baton Rouge school district should stay together.
I realize that currently, the students in this school district may not be getting the best education that they should be and are entitled to receive. But I also don’t think that you should get to choose which children are entitled to a better education than others. If the school district does split, the affluent white children would attend a better school and would receive an enhanced education while the poor minority children would still be getting the inadequate education by still attending the Baton Rouge schools. My reasoning is there should be actions done to benefit all of the children not for just the children that can afford it. Through the utilitarianism approach, I decided that the current Baton Rouge school district should be reformed to improve its education quality for all of the students, not just a select few. The parents should be fighting to change the current school district's education system instead of fighting for a split that would only help their
children.
