Dr. Wong introduced three ethics theories in online lecture 3, which are utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics. Studying OT, understanding how ethics affect the delivery of healthcare services macroscopically and microscopically is essential.
Utilitarianism holds the Greatest Happiness Principle, the greater the portion of stakeholders satisfied, the greater extent the action is right (Mill & Crisp, 1998). This theory judges an action by its outcomes. Utilitarianism usually applies to macroscopic healthcare issues related to interest of the general public. One of the examples is primary care principle discussed …show more content…
This microscopic theory judges right and wrong from an individual’s needs and values, rather than creating norms of right and wrong. This reminds me the experience of Mrs. Yau, an elderly singleton I met in a service. She suffers from diabetes and stroke. Initially, her doctor advised her to stay in the hospital for a rather long period for disease monitoring and regular rehabilitation activities. It is the best way to deal with her case if we judge by deontology. Yet, Mrs. Yau refused to stay because of her cat. She would gain greater happiness taking care of it than receiving attentive care in the hospital. After inter-professional discussion, the doctor demanded Mrs. Yau to stay for 3 days in fear of unstable health condition. Mrs. Yau was taught about exercise for training her legs by physiotherapist. Occupational therapist modified her living environment, striking a balance between bringing convenience and safety to her and keeping enough space for cat. Mrs. Yau should visit a clinic nearby for regular check-ups. This patient-centered arrangement responds to Mrs. Yau preference to stay with the cat, but at the same time, take care of patient’s physical health. This is a demonstration of virtue ethics. After attending the lecture, I realize virtue ethics can affect the delivery of healthcare and inter-professional learning can help us designing a comprehensive patient-centered therapy.
I would apply ethics in my future work to ensure best delivery of healthcare services is
