The topic of my newspaper article will be Public Opinion of Police by Different Ethnic Groups. Ethnicity and the Police Part I: Outline People of different ethnic groups in the United States have an opinion of the police that is negative. There are many different reasons why people of different ethnic groups have such a negative opinion of the police. One reason why people of different ethnic groups have a negative opinion of police is they see police officers committing crimes without being punished. Another reason why people of different ethnic groups have a negative opinion of police is that they have no trust for the police.
Committing Crimes without being punished. A perfect example of
why people of different ethnic groups have a negative opinion of police officers is the story of the Rodney King beating. After leading officers on a high speed chase, Rodney King was beaten by four white Los Angeles police officers. The officers were indicted by the grand jury and later acquitted of all charges, according to “CNN” (2012). This example has caused the people of the African American community to distrust police officers because they could get away with committing crimes like beating a suspect without being punished.
Reasons for distrust of police officers There are many different reasons why people of different ethnical groups have distrust of police officers. One major reason is racial profiling. This may be driving in the wrong neighborhood and being pulled over because a person is of a different race. Another example would be a person that is being target for bag check and body searches at the airport because they are of a different nationality. Without trust the police officers have a hard time protecting these communities.
