newspapers which have done stories against the computer usage in schools .He gives names of the New york Times, the Washington Post ,PBS. and Nicholas Carr's widely read book He cites numerous sources in the article to make his argument more and more concrete. He makes his own point by telling that Duke researcher's findings acknowledged improved computing skills and named a Tv program "Sesame Street" and a TV channel "The Discovery Channel" to tell how these advancements were enhancing the creativity of children. The author also refers to the 5 year study of North Carolina middle school by Victor and Ladd to analyze what effects did the introduction of computers in homes have on children.
The author uses excellent pathos and logos to appeal to readers emotions through logical reasoning and effective stories and real life experiences. He narrates an incident of a
French Philosopher Jacques Derrida who was asked if he had read all the books in his huge library and his response was that he had read just four. The author uses this example to tell that there are a lot of books which can't all be read by children while internet gives a wide range of reading material on different subjects available for a balanced learning of an individual. He emotionally influences the audience by making generalizations that all children are not interested in reading works of Shakespeare or Jane Austen though their works were master pieces of literature yet the new generation of youth needs different forms of learning which are unconventional and attractive for the children like creative schools such as Quest2learn.He uses formal and informal diction through out his
essay.
He also moulds the perception of the readers about the role of internet by making statements like "Net is making us smarter . . . . only if we define intelligence by Net's own standards." This clearly shows that he uses complex sentences and techniques to strike people's emotions in every way possible to persuade them. The author in the conclusion,in a serious tone, emphasizes the role of parents to monitor their children to ensure productive usage of technology.
The author uses contrasting techniques by stating different ways of learning that were by using internet or by reading the old fashioned books and differentiates between these different methods of teaching the students. He writes a whole paragraph putting forth the arguments about Books vs internet .Author contrasts the usage of computers and internet with the usage of TV and automobiles saying that internet encourages interactive engagement and creativity while televisions and cars don't.
Though the author has used effective logos, pathos and contrasting techniques in his essays but the evidences and findings he put forth to attack technology were more solid and credible than those he used to defend it.The way he bluntly presents alternatives for classic novels might be offensive to the fans of literature.Overall his language was excellent and rhetorical devices were neatly employed to make an effective argument.
