In the passionate essay, “On Compassion,” by the respected Barbara Lazear Ascher, the author convincingly depicts her view towards how she feels about why people show compassion. Ascher’s purpose is to demonstrate to the reader the different classes of society and allow the reader to think about how people may appear compassionate but naturally have a fear that causes them to carry out compassionate acts. The author effectively and steadfastly builds the essay by utilizing an observant and speculative tone, a series of figurative language and an emotional appeal in order to convey her outlook towards the homeless and compassion.…
Compassion was a common theme in The Awareness by Gene Stone and Jon Doyle . To show compassion requires a desire to be sympathetic, show pity, love, and general concern for others. While in The Awareness each animal had varying ranges of emotions, such as anger, vengeance, and pity. Compassion was a common thread in each of the chapters. Compassion is a choice made, it simply requires an awareness of feelings and a decision to live with love, respect, and consideration.…

In the book To Kill a Mockingbird, by Harper Lee, the main character Scout learns many forms of compassion. But what is compassion? Compassion is the feeling or having feelings for what others are going through. It can either be happy, or sad feelings. It is just trying to connect with what they are feeling. Scout learns about compassion through a couple of things. She learns it through Boo Radley and his situation, through Tom Robinson, and through Dill with his family problems. Compassion is an important thing in life and humanity as the Dalai Lama said.…

Compassion is something we all must give and receive because compassion is the one thing that makes us human. It is when somebody shows someone else that they care about them, and to stop ones suffering. In other words: love. It is not possible to have love without compassion. The two work together like clockwork. Compassion is necessary to the human experience because if someone is not shown compassion (thus not experiencing it) they will suffer.…
I know that empathy means to try to see it through their eyes and feel what they feel.…
Empathy refers to “the ability to understand and share the feelings of others” (dictionary source). However, effective altruists are not drawn to the cause because of emotions. Instead, they are more concerned with maximizing the benefits with a limited amount of resources. In other words, effective altruists are very analytical and calculative…
In This is Water by David Foster Wallace he uses compassion to develop his speech by talking about his concern and his day-to-day life. Compassion is the sympathetic pity and concern for the suffering or misfortunes of others. Wallace says, “ But please don't worry that i'm getting ready to preach to you about compassion or-directedness or so called virtues”(3). He is not trying to go into too much detail so that others can feel pity for him.He also talk about human nature and how we only care about ourselves and put ourselves first. Wallace says, “ Everything in my own immediate experience support my deep belief that I am the center of the universe , the realest , most vivid and important person in existence”(3). He telling us that everybody care about themselves and think that they…
In my personal experience, I have learned empathy and how to connect with people from the novel The Secret Life Of Bees. In the book, the main character Lily, says “I had asked God repeatedly to do something about T-Ray. He’d gone to church for forty years and was only getting worse.” This quote is talking about how Lily’s only family member, her father T-Ray, keeps abusing her more and more as the years go on, despite her prayers. This taught me empathy, similar to how books taught Obama empathy because it shows me how lucky I am to have a family who loves me and cares for me, unlike Lily in the story.…
Compassion is an essential attribute that nurses must posses in order to provide appropriate care to the patients and families they come in contact with. Nurses work many long shifts taking care of sick patients and grieving families, and may not take the time to care for their physical, emotional and spiritual needs properly. After a while, the long hours and stress may catch up with them and cause compassion fatigue or even burnout. Nurses must learn to care for themselves first and foremost in order to be healthy, happy and spiritually sound, and this in turns allows them to provide great care to their…
The purpose of this paper is to discuss the significance of Compassion Fatigue (CF) and its…
If you ask anyone in the field of healthcare, they will tell you that nursing is a very demanding profession. Many nurses feel weighed down by the emotional and physical demands of their chosen career. They may feel that their efforts go without acknowledgement. They may feel overwhelmed by their workload and feel they do not have adequate support or recourses to confidently and efficiently perform their roles. Part of the nurse’s role is to exhibit compassion for patients and their family members. Yet, compassion is an emotion that requires inner conviction…
According to the dictionary, empathy is defined as “the understanding of another’s situation, feelings, and motives”. I find it difficult to understand that a person could lack such consideration and compassion for another living creature, but, clearly, I have seen otherwise. On many occasions, I have witnessed disconcerting behavior both aimed at myself, or other individuals and have questioned the our society's complacent moral standards. For as long as I can remember, my ability to treat others with kindness has been second nature, and a vital part in my moral practices and beliefs. Faced with many challenges during my childhood, my empathetic disposition was not only enhanced, but, undoubtedly, the strongest building block in my ethical…
Maintaining a capacity for empathy in contrast to pitying the pain of others creates a mirroring effect of compassion with potential to reach countless individuals beyond oneself. A disconnect lies within the use of sympathy to connect to others who are struggling and can often create a patronizing infliction that belittles the individual’s pain. Every individual fights a complex battle throughout their life, and the weapons to win one’s war can often be found in the advice from those who are willing to take the step to relate to another’s level. In the past three months, persisting through a challenge has allowed me to obtain an ability to give back to others that are dealing with similar feelings of discontent by sharing methods I used to bring myself out of confusion in my studies. By empathizing to the hardships…
