Eugenol Research Paper
At high sustained temperatures, natural aromatic compounds can easily be decomposed after being evaporated. Thus, eugenol can be easily decomposed at atmospheric boiling point. In order to prevent this from occurring, the boiling point of the compound should be lowered. In steam distillation process, the boiling point are lowered by the addition of water in an partially vacuumed container, through Raoult’s Law. Eugenol and water has different vapor pressure. Water has a vapor pressure of 760 mmHg while Eugenol has a vapor pressure of 4 mmHg. Thus, the total vapor pressure in the closed system is 764 mmHg, resulting in lower boiling point. Using the Clausius-Clapeyron equation(ln (P1 / P2) = (ΔH / R) (1/T2 - 1/T1)), the boiling point of the

In this experiment, the molecular weight of a condensed vapor was found through a procedure using an unknown liquid. The flask before adding the unknown liquid in was full of air. After the beaker full of water started to boil the flask was examined until the unknown liquid was completely vaporized. At that exact point the flask contained all vapor. At the final weighing the flask contained condensed vapor and air. There is always a chance for error. Some sources of error could have come with completing this lab over an open water bath and some water vapor may have been in place. Also, too much vapor could have escaped and the experiment might not have been stopped quick…

The distillation procedure is initiated by gradually heating the mixture until it reaches the temperature of the liquid with the lower boiling point. This liquid then turns into a vapor and leaves to mixture and is collected by the set up apparatus. In fractional distillation a vigreux column is used. This provides for surface area for condensation to occur. At each condensation event the vapor is enriched in the low boiling point component and the liquid is enriched in the high boiling point component. The surfaces where condensation occurs are called theoretical plates. Separation is more efficient when there are more theoretical plates. Therefore, fractional distillation is more efficient in separating than simple distillation. Another new technique was gas chromatography. Gas chromatography is used to separate volatile components of a mixture. First, a small amount is draw up into a syringe and the contents of the syringe are placed into a hot injector pot of the gas chromatograph. The components of the mixture evaporate into the gas phase inside the injector. A carrier gas flows through the injected and pushed the…

It is hard for me to imagine the barriers black composers and lyricist had to face in Broadway in the early 20th century, but Eubie Blake and Noble Sissle hit them head on and has earned himself a spot in Broadway’s long history. James Hubert Blake was born Baltimore in 1983 to former slaves. He grew up listening to rag time music, which would be his mark on Broadway. He started playing a pump organ at home before the age of 5, and would being playing professional by the time he was 6. During this time, he would play at brothers and saloons until he had finally secured a steady job at the Goldfield Hotel in Baltimore. In 1915, Blake and Noble Sissle began a long career of working together extensively, forming a partnership that would last for 60 years.…

A sexually mature adult axolotl, at age 18–24 months, ranges in length from 15–45 cm (6–18 in), although a size close to 23 cm (9 in) is most common and greater than 30 cm (12 in) is rare. Axolotls possess features typical of salamander larvae, including external gills and a caudal fin extending from behind the head to the vent. Their heads are wide, and their eyes are lidless. Their limbs are underdeveloped and possess long, thin digits. Males are identified by their swollen cloacae lined with papillae, while females are noticeable…

As a liquid evaporates, it lowers the temperature of the substances around them, because evaporation is an endothermic process. In the graph, each substance has a different curve. Some lowered the temperature much more than others. This is because different substances require differing amounts of energy to evaporate. To test this, the temperature change from the evaporation of 4 different alcohols was measured and compared, along with cyclohexane. Methanol had the largest change in temperature, 18.9 ºC. This indicates that methanol has the weakest intermolecular attractions out of the 4 alcohols, because it evaporated the most. This may be because methanol is a small molecule so it has less electrons and therefore is not as polarizable as…

The idea of an independent Jewish state is not a new concept. In the Tanakh, the Jewish cannon, God promises to Abraham that he will “…Make you into a great nation, and I will bless you; I will make your name great, and you will be a blessing. I will bless those who bless you, and whoever curses you I will curse; and all peoples on earth will be blessed through you.”1 This was no empty promise from God. Abraham journeyed through the land of Canaan until he arrived at Shechem where God blessed the land of to Abraham’s children, “ To your offspring I will give this land.”2 The idea of an independent Jewish State is not one that was simply devised before the independence of Israel in 1949, but…

In steam jet refrigeration systems, water can be used as the refrigerant. Like air, it is perfectly safe. These systems were applied successfully to refrigeration in the early years of this century. At low temperatures the saturation pressures are low (0.008129 bar at 4°C) and the specific volumes are high (157.3 m3/kg at 4°C). The temperatures that can be attained using water as a refrigerant are not low enough for most refrigeration applications but are in the range which may satisfy air conditioning, cooling, or chilling requirements. Also, these systems are used in some chemical industries for several processes, e.g. the removal of paraffin wax from lubricating oils. Note that steam jet refrigeration systems are not used when temperatures below 5°C are required. The main advantages of this system are the utilization of mostly low-grade energy…
