In this experiment, the molecular weight of a condensed vapor was found through a procedure using an unknown liquid. The flask before adding the unknown liquid in was full of air. After the beaker full of water started to boil the flask was examined until the unknown liquid was completely vaporized. At that exact point the flask contained all vapor. At the final weighing the flask contained condensed vapor and air. There is always a chance for error. Some sources of error could have come with completing this lab over an open water bath and some water vapor may have been in place. The distillation procedure is initiated by gradually heating the mixture until it reaches the temperature of the liquid with the lower boiling point. This liquid then turns into a vapor and leaves to mixture and is collected by the set up apparatus. In fractional distillation a vigreux column is used. This provides for surface area for condensation to occur. At each condensation event the vapor is enriched in the low boiling point component and the liquid is enriched in the high boiling point component. The surfaces where condensation occurs are called theoretical plates. Separation is more efficient when there are more theoretical plates. Therefore, fractional distillation is more efficient in separating than simple distillation. Another new technique was gas chromatography. Gas chromatography is used to separate volatile components of a mixture. As a liquid evaporates, it lowers the temperature of the substances around them, because evaporation is an endothermic process. In the graph, each substance has a different curve. Some lowered the temperature much more than others. This is because different substances require differing amounts of energy to evaporate. To test this, the temperature change from the evaporation of 4 different alcohols was measured and compared, along with cyclohexane. Methanol had the largest change in temperature, 18.9 ºC. In steam jet refrigeration systems, water can be used as the refrigerant. Like air, it is perfectly safe. These systems were applied successfully to refrigeration in the early years of this century. At low temperatures the saturation pressures are low (0.008129 bar at 4°C) and the specific volumes are high (157.3 m3/kg at 4°C). The temperatures that can be attained using water as a refrigerant are not low enough for most refrigeration applications but are in the range which may satisfy air conditioning, cooling, or chilling requirements.
