Jamestown (Important to Know
England sent a crew to establish a colony in America; they settled near the Chesapeake Bay and named it Jamestown after King James.
Chosen because of deep water (for sea access), and easy defense from the ocean.
However the swampy water was undrinkable and full of mosquitos.
Jamestown was attacked by Natives and vulnerable from that side (west).
John Rolfe, a colonist, brought tobacco seeds to Jamestown and they started growing it as a cash crop and married Pocahontas to creating peace with the natives.
Once Pocahontas died, the settlers demanded more land for farming, causing tension.
The house of burgesses was then founded and individual land ownership was instituted.
Eventually Natives became aggravated and attacked the colonies.
Chief Powhatan was eventually captured and killed, causing Natives to assimilate.
Jamestown burned down twice. The first time rebuilt and the second time moved and renamed Williamsburg in honor of the new king, King James.
Plymouth (Important To Know)
Founded by the religious group later called the Pilgrims.
Puritans and Protestants were exiled from England and went to the Netherlands.
However England continued to hunt down people like Brewster, who criticized the king.
They were given a land plot by the London Virginia Company near the Hudson and decided to immigrate and settle there.
When they landed, the colonists drafted the Mayflower Compact, a document that just said that the colony was to be ruled like any English town.
They chose an area called Cole’s Hill where they could build a village and Fort Hill where they could build a cannon.
