Virginia. As previously mentioned, Established by a group of men and boys this colony was established for the purpose of who sought to gaining wealth from the riches of the New World, however, Jamestown is considered the most unsuccessful village in America. This first colony in North America was meant to be a place where commerce would flourishbe employed. The 104 men and boys who made up the group of immigrants from England had been instructed to build a fort on a traversable river so that boats could easily bring their goods to be traded. Despite the good intentions of entrepreneurship, disorder soon followed the arrival of the new colonists. On a different note, a group of humble, English farmers voyaged to the New World to seek refuge from religious persecution.
These people were the Pilgrims. The Pilgrims formed an agreement before setting foot in America called the “Mayflower Compact.” This accord became the foundation for the Pilgrims’ eventual success and impact on the future of the colonies. Like Jamestown, the colony of Plymouth was ravaged by death in the early months of its founding. Why? efforts. Eight years after the Pilgrims arrived at Plymouth Rock, another group of religious people sought refuge in the New World from religious intolerance.
The emigration? of Puritans to America began the Great Migration, a time in the 1630s when 16,000sixteen thousand Puritans voyaged to the Massachusetts Bay. This number of immigrants surpassed the amount of both the Jamestown colonists and the Pilgrims. The Puritans, children of the Protestant Reformation, had been persecuted by the authorities of England who refused to accept the Puritans’ ideas of institutional reform. Unlike the previous pioneers who had ventured to America, the Puritan group consisted of families that included father and mother, plus children. Because these families had been formed before their trip to America, the gender ratio was more balanced than those of the prior settlers. In the New World, these Puritan families found the religious freedom that had not been permitted in
England. To compare and contrast the successes and failures of these three colonies, one must first understand the morals and aims of each settlement. Jamestown was a township that became rooted by greed. Because the men of the colony were uncooperative and pursued their own personal interests, there was a lack of leadership among the group, which led to Jamestown’s decline. Due to poor planning, the men of the colony endured a severe time of famine which that led some settlers to the inhumanity of cannibalism. The men of Jamestown also ran into issues with their neighboring Native Americans. Jamestown became was subject to frequent attacks by the Indians, which became yet another factor leading to their downfall. Matters did notn’t seem to turn around until a year later when Captain John Smith took up leadership and began to turn the chaos into order. Perhaps if Jamestown had been founded on higher morals and less selfish standards, the colony might have prospered. Plymouth, on the other hand, was a settlement established on Christian principles. Even though the Pilgrims dealt with poverty and a high death rate during their first months in America, they were blessed to have awith a healthy relationship with the local Indians. In fact, their colony would mostre than likely not have survived if it had notn’t been for Squanto and his tribe of Pawtuxet Indians. These natives taught the Pilgrims to farm and hunt in their new environment. With plots of land provided to families by the leaders of their colony, there was little to no want among the settlers. Like Jamestown, but for different reasons, Plymouth had very limited economic opportunities, which caused for the population to increase very slowly. Overall, though, the pioneers who settled Plymouth learned to live successfully in America, and giving thanks to God for their accomplishments, were able to celebrate this country’s first Thanksgiving. Like the Pilgrims, the Puritans founded their town on Christian morals and rules. It is plausible reasonable to believe that, because of their faith in Christ and their desires to honor Him in their new country, the Puritans had a much higher life expectancy than any of the previous settlements. In fact, the life expectancy of the Puritan colony, Massachusetts, is nearly the same as America today. Because of this unexpected factor, the Puritans experienced less emotional shock fromdue to their long-distance resettlement than their fellow pioneers. Another aspect whichthat added to the success of Massachusetts was that the Puritans were bound to one another by their common purpose- to walk in God’s will for their lives. They also pictured themselves as members of the body of Christ, which was another bond that they shared andwhich helped in their success. In their colony, avarice was never a problem, and their entrepreneurial affairs did not a effect their ways of life. The colony of Massachusetts is a good example of what happens when people following the Lord’s plans. for one’s life results in. In conclusion, the pioneers of our country reaped what they sowed. For the men of Jamestown, with dissension became their downfall, making them the most unsuccessful colony in America. The Pilgrims and Puritans, on the other hand, faced some hardships but were able to overcome and be rewarded with a better life in the New World. If our nation today hopes to see prosperity in America’s future, we must be mindful that theour actions and decisions we make today affect will affect our future potential.
