European Imperialism In Africa Dbq Analysis

Africa was imperialized in 1884 at the conference of Berlin. By 1914, Europeans had taken most of Africa. Countries in Africa before imperialism where socially strong because they had a lot of different tribes, cultures and languages. However different ethnic groups were often in conflict. Economically they had complex trade. European countries imperialized Africa because they wanted to spread Christianity and abolish slavery. They also wanted their natural resources. They took advantage of Africa’s conflicts and took over with the cooperation of local leaders and their advanced weapons. They gave them education and medical services that were greatly needed. The British brought them great modern methods such as banking and new industries. This was positive because most Africans did not have the money to afford medical services and education. They brought them great new civilizations and a new better way of life. Also document 2 by the New york times which was a national U.S newspaper published on July 24, 1904 New York, the railroad development in Africa. The railroad development was mainly along the coast and especially in Western and Southern Africa. This shows how the effects of European Imperialism were economically positive because they were making it easier for Africans to travel. Lastly document 3 by Lord Frederick Lugard who was a British officer which later became the governor general of the colony of Nigeria in British 1922 shows how manufactured goods benefited Africans. Food was being wasted before the British came and made the resources more useful. Because Lord Frederick Lugard became the governor of the colony of Nigeria, he might’ve actually been helping which is why he became the governor. The effects were economically positive because based on this document, the British helped Africans use their resources more efficiently.
In document 1 by Ndansi Kumalo who was the Ndebele chief in Rhodesia 1890’s told people who were interested in learning about life under European rule how the British mistreated people. They attacked them, raped their wives and daughters, took their cattle and goat without their consent and treated them like slaves. Africans had no land of their own because since white’s had much better weapons, they easily defeated the native Rhodesians. This document shows how the effects under European imperialism were socially negative because it talks about how British mistreated Africans in their own land and did as they pleased with them and their properties. Furthermore, in document 6 by Kikuyu chief Kabongo who was the chief of Kenya in 1935 wanted to show the British how they changed their way of living. Because he was the chief of Kenya, he might’ve understood better what his people were going through a little better. The British tried to enforce their beliefs on Africans which caused them to change their african traditions and way of living. Africans felt like they weren’t able to live happily and freely under British rule. Children were being taught British customs at a young age. After the British took over, Chief Kikuyu believed their land became violent and hateful.
