generation of grandchildren. Eva’s family lived in the best part of Budapest. Eva lived in a very nurturing & affluent family. Eva's parents and grandparents were University educated.Eva’s family had a household staff, which was very popular in that time. Eva had a nanny , she also had an english tutor and a french tutor who taught her the languages. Eva is no longer fluently though. Eva went through four grades of elementary school, then went to regular school called gymnasium. The Holocaust began in 1933 when Adolf Hitler came to power in Germany and ended in 1945 when the nazis were defeated by allied powers. Eva’s father was in a wholesale paper business. Eva’s mother was a housewife. Eva’s grandfather was in a watch business and was very successful . Eva’s parents traveled a lot, they summered at the lakes in suburb Budapest. Eva’s parents secured protective papers from Raoul Wallenberg, the family didn’t stay in the swedish safe house. They hid in nearby Budapest. Eva was the only child. Eva was ten years old when she went to the concentration camp. eva and her mother tried to convert to Catholic. Eva’s father didn’t convert because he insisted on Eva and her mother to convert so they might not qualify as Jews. This turned out to be a lie because if you were a little Jewish , you were Jewish. At one point Eva’s parents sent her to convent another possibility of survival, but as much as they thought Eva’s odds of survival would be if she was in a convent. Emotionally, the thought if something is going to happen let it happen to all of Eva’s family, this kept them from doing so. eva’s parents chose staying together. eva said it was a good thing. A lot of Eva’s friends ended up convents separated from their parents. Eva was in danger in the countryside not only because she was a hiding Jew from Germans.
There were bombs flying all over the place, & Eva’s family couldn’t tell who was shooting. Eva’s family tried to create a shelter.Eva’s family kept on hearing rumors that the allies were getting closer. But “closer” was not here and it was not over . Food became a big problem. Eva was extremely fussy(she used to smell everything before she put it in her mouth.) There were not a lot of choices. One time Eva's mother was working at the farm, and a chicken had laid an egg and , so she stole the egg. She made a made a small piece of yellow cake. Eva guesses that some flour had been available, but she needed the egg. Eva had always liked sweets,so that was very good. People would share pieces of bread or things like that with Eva’s family.Eva always liked Hungarian sausages, so her mother would cut one tiny slice of sausage and chop it up finely so there were many, many pieces , and she made a sandwhich with the little sausage. All the Jews that had been hiding eventually went back to Budapest, so did Eva’s family. But there was still a bunch of Germans hanging around there. At one point there was a firing line, the Jews were lined up to be shot. However a bomb was dropped
nearby.
