But I will die for committing acts that are were not crimes, and you will live – so much for the justice of your cause” (p.379). The violent turn of events opens Escherich’s eyes to what he has been participating in working for the Gestapo, he questions his purpose, his morals, he goes on to say “ Quangel is right to call Hitler a murderer and me his henchmen. I never cared who manned the tiller, or why this war is being fought, so long as I was able to go about my usual business, the catching of human beings. Then once I caught them I didn’t care what became of them…” (p. 380) and express his disgust with himself.
