Part A: Evaluate Company Q’s current attitude: With reviewing company Q’s current attitude towards social responsibility, I feel it is very poor requires immediate attention. There a few areas of which the company can work on to be more socially responsible. The company just recently closed down two stores due to high crime rates rather than giving it a chance to succeed and help the community in the time of need. Yes the store may have lost some profits, but using the crime rate as an excuse to close down is not very professional. This shows me that the attitude is all about not losing an extra buck rather than fighting to keep your store open. I also see as poor attitude is not allowing old food to be given to the food bank. Due to “risk” of possible fraud and theft, they rather dispose of the food than give it up for a good reason. When a company does not have set rules applied for these types of instances, it means that the company is not prepared and well handled from top to bottom. There will always be theft, it just depends on how the company will contain it. They can create guide lines on both areas, internally and …show more content…

Provide more ethical training to its employees, and understand that there will always be theft in any industry. When I was employed by a local restaurant company, I witness many instances where an employee stole something. At times it was food, condiments and even cash. What company Q needs to do is set up an ethical training program for new and current clients. This way everyone is aware that these actions will not be tolerated. The company may also want to apply additional security features in each location, such as cameras security guards etc. Company Q can also give out rewards for employees reporting co workers that are stealing from the firm. It allows everyone to know that they are being watched for inappropriate actions. There are many ideas that company Q can take, but first it must establish an ethical training

The necessity to close two stores is a significant economic failure for both the community and the stake holders involved in the franchise.     According to the current situation Company Q has a damaged attitude toward social responsibility within their company, all because of low profits being made. Due to high crime rates in certain areas the company has been closing off stores, not realizing the problem they have caused. The people that live in the prospected area where the stores where closed are now forced to travel further for groceries. This causes a problem especially for the poor, who do not have the extra money for extra expenses. I recommend the company take precautionary measures to help catch and promote others not to steal. They could do this by offering a reward, or installing cameras. This would help promote social responsibility within the company. Another very serious problem is the companies unwillingness to donate food for those in need. Especially since the company isn’t losing much or nothing at all by donating. The sudden unwillingness to donate is due to the distrust of the owners with the employees. They believe the employees will start to steal while saying they are donating it to the poor. This is yet another sign of a weak social responsibility within the company. These particular problems and fears are direct situations which concretely damages the social responsibility within the company, as well as the community. My personal recommendation is to draw out concrete guidelines and procedures that the employees have to follow before donating food. This would allow a company to gain trust within the employees as well as being benevolent towards the poor. Especially if cameras are involved employees tend to be more honest. They can also use an employee hiring technique that is based on a persons honesty and dignity. The last problem that the company has is its unwillingness to offer more health conscience food.     The Achilles heel of most business is profit, the ability to keep up those margins and cut losses. Company Q's bottom line was too shallow resulting in the closing of two stores. Both locations were in heavy metropolitan areas with high crime rates and poor neighborhoods. Such actions can have a ripple effect on the community, causing current issues to intensify while adding to unemployment. Poverty that already existed within the community will be more prevalent now. The increase in poverty will hurt the other stores still open, as they will now be targeted for theft. Company Q 's decision to throw away day old items is not socially responsible. They are being socially irresponsible by putting needs of the company first and disregarding the needs of the community.
