Evaluate The Working Model Of Memory
The working model of memory is a model of short term memory which was developed from experimentation and observation by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974. They developed this as they didn't’t believe that short-term memory was as simple as being only one store. The WMM consists of 3 main stores, the central executive, the phonological loop and visuo-spatial sketchpad. The central executive can store information for a brief period of time and has limited capacity, it is needed to perform a number of tasks such as focus and switch attentions, co-ordinate the two sub-systems and connect working memory with LTM. The central executive unit is seen as the most important aspect of the model, yet it is the area we know least about as we haven’t yet proved its existence. …show more content…
The visuo-spatial sketchpad also has limited capacity, and is divided into two components, the visual component which deals with objects and features such as shape and colour and the spatial component which deals with locations etc and it involves tasks such as planning routes and remembering where things are placed in your room. The model was later adapted in 2000 to include the episodic buffer; this was added after the model failed to explain the results of some experiments. The episodic buffer acts as a sort of backup store which works with both the long term memory and the various components of the working

The working memory model is the part of the short term memory which is governed by the ‘central executive which monitors and coordinates the operation of the store systems; Phonological loop and visuo – spatial sketchpad. The phonological loop allows sounds to be stored for brief periods. The visuo spatial sketchpad allows visual and spatial information to be stored for brief periods. The two slave systems within the WMM are completely separate and can work individually.…

Outline and evaluate one alternative to the multi-store model of memory (e.g. working memory, levels of processing) Craik and Lockhart (1972) advanced the levels of processing theory (LOP) as an alternative to the multi-store model. They argued that deeper levels of processing would greatly enhance the strength and durability of a memory trace and therefore its memorability. Thus if you process information “deeply” then it will be stored. Deep processing would, according to the researchers, occur due to greater depth of analysis, elaboration, organisation and distinctiveness.…

Working Memory is STM. In contrast to the Multi-Store Model, where all the information goes to one single store (Unitary store), there are different systems for the different types of information. Working Memory consists of the Central Executive, The Visuo-Spatial Sketch Pad, The Episodic Buffer and the Phonological Loop. These all link back into the Long-Term Memory (LTM).…

( STM )which, according to Miller, has a capacity of 7+/- 2 bits of information. It can last up to 18 seconds, without rehearsal, according to Peterson and Peterson. Baddeley found that information in STM is encoded mainly acoustically, although Brandimonte showed that sometimes it is done visually. If maintenance rehearsal takes place it will remain in STM or be forgotten through decay or displacement. Elaborative rehearsal will then transfer information into long term memory ( LTM ) which has unlimited capacity and, according to Bahrick, can last a lifetime. Baddeley found that LTM encodes mostly semantically. Information can be retrieved from LTM to be used in STM when needed and can be forgotten through decay or displacement.…

Baddeley and Hitch (1974) developed an alternative model of short-term memory which they called the working memory model. The working memory model consists of four components. The central executive which controls and co-ordinates the operation of two subsystems, the phonological loop and the visuo-spatial sketchpad. The central executive controls attention and coordinates the actions of the other components, it can briefly store information, but has a limited capacity. The phonological loop consists of two parts, the articulatory control system and the phonological store. The articulatory control system (the inner voice) where information is rehearsed sub vocally and has a capacity of about 2 seconds. The phonological store (the inner ear) stores information in speech-based form, the speech input is held for a brief duration. The third component, the visuo-spatial sketchpad, mentally manipulates images and space, for example it is used when a person imagines the encodes visual information in terms of separate objects as well as the arrangement of these objects in one's visual field. The final component, episodic buffer, receives input from many sources, temporarily stores this information, and then puts them together in order to construct a mental episode of what is being experienced right now.…

The Working Memory Model (WMM) is a theory by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974. The theory replaces the idea that there is a single Short Term Memory (STM) from Atkinson and Shiffrin (1968), it suggests that the STM is a flexible multi-component system. The WMM suggests that the STM is controlled by the Central Executive (CE) which controls attention, planning and synthesising information. The Central Executive is a flexible system which means it can process audio, visual and sound information, it also has a limited capacity.…

The central executive is the key component of working memory. It works at delegating our attention to specific tasks, determining at any time how the two other components, the phonological loop and the visuo-spatial sketchpad, should be allocated different tasks. The central executive also has an exceedingly short capacity, so it is not able to deal with too many things in one time. The phonological loop also has a restricted capacity. It works in conserving auditory information and preserves which order that information came in. In 1986 Baddeley further divided the phonological loop into two separate components; the phonological store and the articulatory process. The phonological store operates as an inner ear, holding the words you hear and the articulatory processor operates like an inner voice, only used for words heard or seen. It then repeats them silently, which is a form of maintenance rehearsal. The visuo-spatial sketchpad is used when you have to plan a spatial task (determining visual relationships between objects). It stores both visual and spatial data here, but only temporarily. Visual information is what things look like and spatial information is the relationship between things.…

The working memory model (WMM) has four components. The central executive controls and monitors the operation of the other 3 components. It also allocates attention. The phonological loop is sub-divided into 2 smaller components, the articulatory control system, where information is rehearsed sub vocally or in the inner voice and the phonological store where speech is held for a very brief duration in the inner ear. The third component is the visuo spatial sketchpad which deals with visual information obtained by the sensory organs (eyes) or recalled from the LTM. The fourth component is the episodic buffer which acts as a store for visual and acoustic data and the retrieval of long term memory. It has an unlimited duration and capacity.…

The working memory model (WMM) suggests that there are three main components to human memory. The central executive is the key component of working memory and is what directs attention to particular tasks, deciding which ‘resources’ (being the phonological loop and visual-spatial sketchpad) are allocated to which tasks. The central executive has a very limited capacity however, and can’t attend to too many things at once. The phonological loop (PL) too has a limited capacity and is what deals with auditory information; it is split into two further parts, the phonological store which holds the words you hear, and the articulatory process which is for the words you hear/see and are rehearsed…

The multi-store mode is supported by the experiment Sperling 1960 conducted which conveys that short-term memory has a brief duration of 18-30 seconds. The experiment showed that the longer an image was displayed on the screen the better it was recalled; suggesting that if you pay attention to information then it can be retained. Conversely the multi-store model does not account for incidental learning and for why we can remember information that we have not paid attention to. In multi-store model the information is needed to be rehearsed through elaborative or maintenance rehearsal but it doesn’t explain the ability to learn and remember irrelevant information.…

Before the beginning of the Civil War, Americans tried to resolve slavery by drawing or erasing a geographical line to limit or expand the growth of slavery. These lines were not very affective and changed much too often. It begins with the Northwest Ordinance in 1787 and ends with the Crittendon Compromise in 1861. The Northwestern Ordinance (1787) was the biggest success under the Articles of Confederation.…

There is a unique distinction between short-term memory and working memory. Short-term memory is used for holding small pieces of information over a short period of time and the working memory is part of the short-term memory that deals with immediate processes and scientists use it to refer to sustained neural activation. So even though the they directly correspond to one another, they have distinct differences that set them apart such as the tasks that each one is used to accomplish. Scientists here looks at a theoretical approach to the constructs of short-term memory and working memory.…
