She had wanted to be his wife to escape the abuse of her father and she believed her only escape was through Frank. But in reality the ending of the book based on the quote “She set her white face to him, passive, like a helpless animal. Her eyes gave him no sign of love or farewell or recognition.” ( Joyce, pg.23)
In reality Eveline was in love with the idea of Frank not really Frank himself so that is why she chose to stay in her life of abuse rather than leaving with Frank. I wanted to put in the first perspective of Frank because he is a character who love Eveline enough to marry her despite her past of abuse.
The ending of me making Frank wonder if Eveline actually loved him was to show he knew that deep down she never loved him only the idea of him. Throughout the piece I had Frank know the background of abuse and know he needed to save her. As referenced on pg.23 Eveline believes that Frank will save her from the abuse of her father but I posed that Frank did not know to what extent that he is saving her.
