To begin, the ball that is played with now is much different than what was used back in 2500 BC. Instead of dried balls of grass or pig's bladders covered in animal skin, we use synthetic materials to mimic the agile and bouncy qualities that the original ball had. Another evolution is who plays soccer. Before the early 20th century only men played soccer. Now, both men and women play soccer at all different levels. Many rules have also changed. For example, no substitutions were allowed in FIFA, or the Fédération Internationale de Football, until 1923.
