This debacle started in JP Morgan’s Chief Investment Office (CIO), in the London branch of the firm. CIO’s are central to any major bank. Their purpose is to invest the difference between deposits the bank has on hand from its customers and the credit lent out to borrowers. This difference is called the bank’s reserves. With $1.1 billion in deposits and $750 billion on loan, JP Morgan’s CIO handled assets in excess of $350 billion.ii In theory, CIO’s are supposed to keep the reserves safe and to protect them against inflation. However, in reality, most CIOs will enter into more risky investments in order to earn higher returns. This is what the London Whale was doing. Still however, these investments should not be too risky and risk management and risk assessment controls are implemented to stop investments from being entered into when their risk exceeds the CIOs appetite.…

Most people think that moral issues are a matter of “right vs. wrong” because people have their beliefs which make them think they are right. The problem with moral issues is there is no right or wrong because both sides usually have valid arguments but it depends on the side a person is taking. Polarizing values is the way a person sees things. People polarize values based on how they were raised and the different things they were taught to believe in. This could depend on a political party, a relgiion or just a belief that they learned growing up. According page 361 in The Ethical Toolbox, a student got back from a study in Bolivia and he told the teacher that young males were to go to a prostitite for their sexual initiation. This is part of polarizing views becuase that is how their society is raised so that is what they believe in.…

    1. When discussing stereotypes and race, it is important to recognize how insignificant skin color is. Racism itself if focused mainly on cultural states, and more times than not, whites are considered culturally superior to people of color. The treatment of African Americans and Native Americans in American culture perfectly demonstrate how oppositional dichotomies of race define racial stereotypes. Cultural dominance was set since the first settlers began to participate in the slave trade. While the black slaves looked very different than their white counterparts, it was the culture of these Africans that subjected them to discrimination. Slave owners believed their culture was superior, meaning they could rape, enslave, and hold their workers prisoner without punishment. Blacks continue to be mistreated by the whites in power till this day, whether it be profiling by authorities leading to massive incarceration rates or poor representation by the federal government. Whites also believed they were culturally superior to Native Americans. Many Native Americans showed hospitality to the white settlers, but the major cultural differenced ended up destroying rel3ations and the majority of Native peoples. Only the naïve can believe that racism and stereotypes are caused by the color of one’s skin, it is cultural differences that cause the oppositional dichotomies that define race.…

In this situation I would tell the cashier I was given too much money. I typically look at my change before leaving the counter and in this case it would be immediately obvious that I had received too much. When I was a teenager I worked in a cash register environment and I know people can lose their jobs over having a short register. It was an honest mistake made by the cashier and I wouldn’t want anyone to lose their job. If I can prevent that from happening, I will gladly speak up and give the money back. In my personal value system, I typically live by the “golden rule”. If the situation was reversed I would want someone to tell me if I had overpaid. I also value my integrity and I would feel guilty if I knew I had received too much money and walked out of the store without saying anything.…

The culture of a health care organization, whether big or small, plays an important role in the ethical decision-making. However, when small businesses serving the health care industry place more emphasis on profit, they risk losing their integrity. Health care practices that are more concerned with their place in the market, for instance Health Maintenance Organization (HMO) often face greater challenges in maintaining ethical standards. On the other hand, an organization that promotes a thoughtful culture fosters decision-making based on what’s best for the patients, the staff and the community as a whole (Ray, 2012).…
