Crises level can be described has having three different levels of Crises. (1) Basic crises theory (2) Expanded Crises, and (3) Applied crises theory (James & Gilliland, 2017).
In Miami, Florida, a domestic violence call was made from a woman claiming that she had been attacked, kicked, and punched by her boyfriend Nick Gordon. He is the ex-boyfriend of singer Whitney Houston’s daughter Bobbi Christina. All too often we hear of domestic violence incidences in every social class. Domestic violence affects all races, and cultures. In this situation, as a counselor I would apply the basic crises level number one. The first step in this crisis is to make sure that the individual …show more content…
is safe and out of harm’s way. I would also focus on long term treatment solutions, which include group therapy, and educational programs. The crisis intervention I would incorporate in this situation is the Trauma Recovery and Empowerment Model (TREM). Although designed for female trauma victims with severe mental disorders. This model addresses a variety of complex issues that survivors of sexual and physical abuse deal with (SAHHSA, 2014).
Theory # 3 – Chaos Theory
It seems as if every other month we are hear of a workplace violence incidence.
Multiple lives taken by a disgruntle employee. On June 05, 2017 once again in Orlando, Florida, a walk into an office and fatally shoots five former employees before turning the gun on himself. I would categorize this work place violence situation as a level three Applied crises theory. Because of the workplace violence, individuals will need to change to meet changing conditions (James & Gilliland, 2017).
In Chaos theory the events are random, complex, and unpredictable. A characteristic of the Chaos theory is that some refer to the situation as an emergent complex messiness (James, and Gilligan, 2017). In working with individuals who are victims of workplace violence it is important that I ensure that they feel safe, secure, have access to food and shelter, (SAMHSA, 2014).
As their counselor, it is also important that I reassure my clients that this crisis is temporary, and regaining normalcy is possible. Allowing my clients to feel, grieve, while being patience, empathic, listening and understanding are important tools that I will have to utilize when dealing with clients suffering from a crisis. These individuals have been traumatized. Some may eventually suffer from PTSD. As a counselor, it will be important for me to recognize the symptoms of PTSD as
well.
