Clinical Question Does horizontal violence in nursing affect the way nurses perform in their working environment? Horizontal violence has been described broadly as any unwanted abuse or hostility within the workplace (Horizontal Violence in Nursing). Horizontal violence in nursing is hostile, aggressive, and harmful behavior by a nurse or group of nurses toward a coworker or group of nurses (Horizontal Violence in Nursing). It is done through attitudes, actions, words or behaviors (Horizontal Violence in Nursing). Horizontal violence is categorized by the occurrence of a sequence of hostile incidents over time, …show more content…
as opposed to one hostile incident in the workplace. These repeated conflicts for nurses in the workplace makes horizontal violence very overwhelming, leading to symptoms of depression and posttraumatic stress syndrome (Horizontal Violence). Horizontal violence is usually hidden, hard to recognize, or discover. This makes if difficult for the victim to seek help or support within the work place. Horizontal violence also has been described as an oppressed group of nurses, mostly having woman members (Horizontal Violence in Nursing). It has been interpreted that the development of horizontal violence within the nursing workplace comes from feeling powerless, lack of control over the working environment, and low self-esteem (Horizontal Violence in Nursing). The purpose of this paper is to examine if horizontal violence in nursing can affect the way nurses perform in their working environment.
Horizontal violence is a form of bullying in the workplace. A bully in the nursing workplace will deliberately cause stress to another employee, intimidate the employee, blame, fight, refuse to help, threaten, name calling them, gossip, ignoring, and publically humiliate the employee. Horizontal violence is also an act of aggression to your co-worker and it creates a negative environment for the victim. When this occurs, nurses lack teamwork and it can affect the way they perform their work. It creates tension between co-workers and impairs their relationship to work together.
Level of Evidence As I am researching and learning more and more about horizontal violence in nursing I'm going to lean towards quantitative design. The causes and effects of horizontal violence using quantitative methods. Quantitative research has provided a foundation describing the frequencies, trends and relationships associated with horizontal violence in the nursing workplace (Mendez, 2011). I would use quantitative design. The data I would gather is people's opinions and gather all of that information and make statistics about the people being involved so my results can match my data. The statistics will help me in gathering information by showing the effects of horizontal violence.
Search Strategy One of the things that took time is to get the exact term to type in the search box when searching for articles or journals.
Another challenging part is when it takes time for me to open up and read all of the articles to see if most of it is relevant. I always check and see if my sources are reliable. It's sometimes hard to find an article that is within a couple years. You do not want an article that is 10 plus years. I find it easy to use articles from Library database such as CINAHL, or EBSCO because I know the journal or article available are scholarly and credible information. I also found out that if you have the filter on for full text then you can scan the abstracts to see if the article seems useful for your research. I use the full text filter so I am not reading abstracts I can't get the full text for, but an abstract will save myself time instead of having to read the full article. Scanning the full article to see if it meets the requirements is so much better. I did some research and clicked on full text, and then when I typed in the search box I noticed the articles or journals was more specific. When I did it from before it would just be too broad and took me a long time. It really makes my life easier. The two most relevant articles I found were “Horizontal Violence: A Conundrum for Nursing” and “Professional Practice: Horizontal Violence in Nursing.” These two articles I found have really great information. They explain so much about what horizontal …show more content…
violence is and what are the causes and symptoms of it. It explains about the seriousness of horizontal violence. These symptoms can lead to major difficulties in the victim’s life.
Conclusion
Horizontal violence in nursing is a very serious condition in which a person is being bullied by their co-worker.
The victim feels threatened by their bully and can be in serious danger by them. Horizontal violence is any unwanted abuse or hostility within the workplace. It can cause many symptoms in the victim such as depression, low self-esteem, and posttraumatic stress syndrome. Horizontal violence affects the entire health care team and working environment. It can spread between employees or groups of employees. Horizontal violence can spread from the victim to the health care team and employees and finally to the patient. Causing stress on the patient is the last thing the patient wants to worry about. It is very important that if a patient is dealing with horizontal violence or if we witness horizontal violence happening around us, then we should attempt to stop it or seek help for the victim. Many complications can arise from horizontal violence in nursing and as a healthcare member it is our duty to make sure everyone around us is safe and to make people feel better and happy about themselves.
