Lateral violence is acts between contemporaries whereas bullying is acts committed by one in a higher level of authority and can occur over time, with this in mind it shows that there is a very fine line, if any between bullying and lateral violence. Wilson’s ‘An exploration of bullying behaviors in nursing: a review of the literature’ highlights that there is bullying in nursing and give actions on how to minimize or fight it. First it highlights those more likely to be bullies, such as competent or proficient nurses or those who are established workers and that “those likely to be bullied are students and new staff members”. So my fellow cohort, take notes! as an increase in said prevalence cause individuals to leave their
job are the profession decreasing patient care,
Key points
• “Nurses were more likely to be bullied than any other health professionals, and […] bullying [is] more prevalent in workplaces where one gender is dominant” (Wilson, 2016, p.304).
• “Factors contributing to bullying are hierarchical management and employees not feeling empowered” (Wilson, 2016, p.303).
• “An important first step in dealing with bullying is for the individual to recognize and admit that they are being bullied” (Wilson, 2016, p.305).
• “There needs to be a zero-tolerance attitude and prompt action by colleagues and managers to combat and eradicate bullying behaviors in nursing” (Wilson, 2016, p.306).
Lateral violence is a rising issue in nursing which will have a negative impact on patient centered care, thus we need to be alert in recognizing said behaviors and nip in in the bud as soon as possible.
