A. Attention getter: When you think of family game night, Monopoly, Uno, and Scrabble come to mind. But when I think of family game night, the only game I hope to be playing is Lotería!. B. Revealed object: The cultural artifact that I chose to talk about is the Lotería game.

Lotería is very similar to bingo. In Lotería you have a board that has 16 spaces. In each space, there is a different image or character similar to the different numbers on each spot on a bingo board. In total there are 54 different images/characters that can possibly be on your board. The 54 different characters are each on one of the 54 cards in a deck. To play, you choose your own Lotería board, shuffle the deck, randomly pull out cards from the deck and call them out, and place a marker on each space on your board that matches the card that is being called out. To win, you must be the first to yell out “Lotería!” when your have 4 markers that have made up a horizontal, vertical, or diagonal, diagonal row. In addition, you can yell out “Centros!” (which translates to center) if you get the four spots in the center or “quadrito limpio” (which translates to small clean square) if you ONLY have 4 spots that have made up a square anywhere on the …show more content…
Why I identify with this culture
1. My involvement with Lotería began at a very young age at family parties. We would all gather around a long table, fight to get the “lucky” Lotería boards that we wanted, pick up a handful of uncooked frijoles to work as our markers, and waited for my dad to shuffle the deck. We each put in a quarter for each board that we played in the center of the table and divided them equally into 2 different piles. These made up the cash prices for those to won “Lotería” or “Centros.” My dad was always the person who called out the cards and I was glad to be his helper. 2. Ever since I started playing Lotería, boards number 7 and 11 have been my lucky cards. I somehow found them to be significant because they both have La Estrella in one of their four center spots. Since I play Lotería at every family gathering I hope to make it to the table first so that I can have first pick of the boards and ensure that I play with my lucky 7-11 boards.
