Example Of Intellectual Humility

The critical thinking trait I do well is Intellectual humility. Throughout my career, numerous situations surfaced in which I did not have the answer. Being a cross trainee, I was forced to rely on Intellectual Humility often. When I cross trained into the AGE AFSC I was a Staff Sergeant. Therefore, Airman approached me frequently with questions pertaining to a job I had very little experience in. Consequently, it is hardwired in my nature to openly admit when I do not know something as well as consider the gray areas of situations. Nevertheless, it never occurred to me to just make something up. Instead, I seized the opportunity to learn in conjunction with connecting with the Airman who asked the question by stating “I don’t know, but let’s find out together”. This expanded my knowledge in addition to building credibility with the Airmen.
An Airman inquired about procedures to inspect the combustion chamber on a -60 Gas Turbine generator. I informed the Airman that I did not know, but would find the information with him. Thus, I learned where to find the information regarding the subject and mentor the Airman on navigating Technical Orders for data. Another aspect of Intellectual humility is understanding that situations are rarely black and white. Recognizing that people in general have a tendency to jump to conclusions assisted me in developing this cognitive area. For instance, SSgt Smith worked in my section during the higher tenure change for TSgts and viewed it as very black and white. In other words, “if you can’t make TSgt in 15 years you’re a dirt bag”.
