I. Title
Alternative Hand Sanitizer
II. Problem
The feasibility of guava extract (Psidium guajava) and Aloe vera (Aloe barbadensis) as hand sanitizer
III. Rationale
Hand sanitizers are actually expensive. But I hope to make an alternative hand sanitizer from guava and aloe vera which could be cheaper
IV. Methodology A. Materials
Guava leaves
Aloe vera
Ethyl alcohol
Glass container
Bottles
Knife
Filtering medium
Spoon
B. Procedures
Extraction of Essential oil in guava leaves
1. Dry the guava leaves.
2. After the guava leaves have dried put it in a glass container (with a cover) and immerse with alcohol.
3. Shake the glass container for 2-3 minutes, and set it aside for 5 days and be sure to shake the container 2 times a day.
4. After 5 days strain the leaves from the alcohol.
5. Use the same ethyl alcohol and put again dried leaves of guava and follow step 3 and 4.
6. Do step 5 for five times.
6. After the soaking process, strain it as usual then put the alcohol back into the container and sealed it tightly .Then set it aside in a dark place for two days.
7. After two days place the sealed container in the refrigerator. Make sure the alcohol doesn’t freeze so the essential oil only solidifies. Strain the essential oil and quickly put it in a bowl before it melts.
8. After extracting the essential oil put it in a clean bottle.
Preparation of Aloe vera Gel
1. Peel the outer skin of the Aloe vera and use a spoon to scrape the flesh.
2. Blend for a good texture.
3. Keep the gel in bottle container.
Making of Hand Sanitizer
1. Mix together the Aloe vera gel, essential oil and alcohol.
2. Put the made hand sanitizer in clean bottles.
III. Implication
Guava extract and aloe vera can be used as an alternative hand sanitizer
