II. Purpose: The purpose of this lab is to see how iron reacts with a copper (II) chloride solution.
III. Equipment and Reagents
Scoop copper (II) chloride (CuCl2)
Beaker Iron (Fe)
Wash Bottle water (H2O)
Scale Hydrogen chloride (M HCl)
Filter Paper
IV. Procedure:
1. Obtain a clean, dry 250 mL beaker.
2. See teacher to obtain a scoop of CuCl2 in the beaker.
3. Add approximately 50 mL of tap water to the crystals in the beaker. Stir the mixture with a glass stirring rod until all of the crystals are dissolved.
4. Obtain 2 clean, dry nails. If necessary, polish the nails with steel wool to remove any rust or protective coating. Do Not wash the nails!
5. Weigh the nails together and record their total mass to the nearest 0.0001 g.
6. Place the nails in the copper (II) chloride solution and let the system stand undisturbed for about 20 minutes.
7. Pick up the nails, one at a time, with a pair of crucible tongs. Using a wash bottle, wash all of the reddish-brown material from the nails into the beaker.
8. Put the nails aside on a piece of paper toweling to dry overnight.
9. Carefully decant the solution from the reddish-brown material remaining in the beaker. Decant means to pour off the liquid, leaving a solid behind.
10. Wash the remaining solid with about 25 mL of distilled water and decant. Repeat the washing and decanting procedure 4 or 5 times. Be careful to lose as little of the solid as possible.
11. Next, wash the solid with about 25 mL of 1 M HCl solution. Decant and wash again with distilled water and decant.
12. With a pencil write your names on a piece of filter paper and mass the paper to the nearest 0.0001 g.
13. Set up a filtration apparatus and filter the solid into the filter paper as directed by your teacher.
14. Open the wet filter paper and lay flat on paper towel to dry overnight.

15. Weigh the nails (on the
