In the first video the man makes himself sound like a great singer saying “My specialty is anything low.” This self evaluation is shown to be wrong when he gets onstage and can’t sing at all. This is an example of a distorted self image. This could have been because he was never told by anyone that he was a terrible singer, or it could have been because he believed that he was a good singer and wouldn’t believe anyone who told him otherwise. If this was the case he would be displaying cognitive conservatism. They all appear to have a distorted self image, making them believe they are good singers when they are not. This can be caused by distorted feedback. Distorted feedback is a message that is either overly negative or positive. Distorted feedback can be very negative like “the remarks of overly critical parents, cruel friends, and uncaring teachers…” It can also be too positive like “...the praise of doting parents, or brown nosing employees.” (Adler and Proctor 44) The positive distorted feedback is what the bad singers in the video likely were exposed to.
