named Atticus, defending a black man, Tom Robinson, at court. Basically, Tom Robinson is being charged by Bob Ewell with raping a white woman named Mayella Ewell, Bob's daughter. Since Scout is so young, she doesn't understand many things, especially why people are having an issue with this court case. Scout doesn't know much about racism considering the fact that she's confused as to why people are having such a controversy. In chapter 9 Scout mentions, “(that if all lawyers defended Negroes) Then why did Cecil say you defended niggers? He made it sound like you were runnin’ a still.” (p. 100) It showed that the kids at school are talking foul about Atticus all because he’s defending a black man. Atticus tells Scout, “No matter what anyone says to you, don't you let ‘em get your goat. Try fighting with your head for a change.” (p. 101) This is when Scout starts to realize that from then on out, there was going to be people that were going to give them a hard time about the case. There have been many incidents of racism that include violence. In the book when Tom Robinson, the black male charged for rape, is in jail, Atticus goes to watch him and talk to him. A group of men show up to lynch Tom Robinson but then Scout and Jem show up. Atticus tells Jem, “Go home, Jem. Take Scout and Dill home,” (p. 203) and Jem refuses to leave the men end up leaving because they realize Jem knows what they were up to. Atticus doesn't end up getting mad because he knows that Jem was trying to be a hero and he did potentially save the life of Tom Robinson that night. This is when Scout realizes the seriousness of the entire situation considering that the white folk wanted to murder a black man for the suspicion of him raping a white woman. An allegation is a claim or assertion that someone has beein doing or did something illegal or wrong, typically an allegation is made without proof.
So when someone accuses someone else of doing something illegal or wrong they end up going to court with lawyers and with proof to prove that what they are accusing the other of is true. Bob Ewell accuses Tom Robinson of raping his daughter, Mayella Ewell. First off, Bob Ewell is a very vindictive man. He accuses a black man for a crime he did not commit. Bob Ewell simply wants to cover up the fact that he beats his daughter. He accuses Tom Robinson because he knows that it will be easier for him to get away with it if it is a black man at trial since during those times black folk were looked down on by white folk. In the end after Tom Robinson is found guilty he realizes that there is no more hope left for him and tries to escape which leads to him being shot 17 times. The judge did find him innocent and Atticus did prove that he was innocent but the jury did
not.
In conclusion, it doesn't matter what the color of your skin is, never judge someone by their color. Back then that's what people did. They judged a person in a negative way if they were “colored.” Never judge a person by the color of their skin. As Nelson Mandela once said, “No one is born hating someone by the color of his skin, or his background or his religion. People learn to hate, and if they can learn to hate, then they can be taught to love.”
