Before Marvin’s game his dad, Mr. Whalen, asked Marvin if he wanted a ride down to the school and Marvin then replied with “No. Thanks, Dad, but no. It’ll do me good to run down there.” (435) This act shows how Marvin is not lazy and knows how to prepare for the game. In addition to warming up he rests, he also knows what to eat and how much. Mrs. Whalen was nervous that her husband, Mr. Whalen, would end up getting caught in the excitement of the game. He promised her that he wouldn’t. When they got to the game, Mr. Whalen eyed the big center before the game started. During the game the big center would not stop fouling Marvin and, “again the big center fouled Marvin.” (439) This act could cause Marvin to get seriously injured, but instead he ignores it and takes his shots. The big center’s dad was speaking harshly about Marvin and saying Marvin should get called instead of his son, Guido. Ironically Mr. Whalen, “who talked long and seriously to Marvin about sportsmanship,” (433) ends up getting into a brawl at one of Marvin’s basketball game over this. Right before this had happened Mr. Whalen’s wife told him that he should go take a smoke because he was getting too excited, and she was trying to help him relax. He achieved that goal because he was ambitious and was not going to let anything stop him from doing that. I had that ambition in the first year of high school, but it didn’t turn out that well and it’s going to sound dumb what stopped me from trying out. Let me tell you the story first. The school basketball workouts to get you in shape for tryouts. I attended almost every single one, and they were hard. I didn’t want to go, but I forced myself to go because I had the ambition to work hard and make the team. Well, it didn’t go so well, because earlier in the year I had signed up for Driver’s Ed. Well first of all, It was really hard to sign up for that class, because people sign up so fast. Also we had already paid for it so I couldn’t get out of the class. Well, when tryout day came I found out that I had Driver’s Ed. and even if I skipped Driver’s Ed and went to tryouts I couldn’t go to the practices, because of Driver’s Ed. It is a stupid reason, but even though I didn’t try out I wanted to be on the team so bad and I tried really hard and worked hard, but it all kind of worked out In two months I will get my permit and will be able to drive. Also there is always next year, and I can improve my skills to make it for sure this…

The anticipation of knowing whether we were going to be champions or not was very high as we played our hearts out on the court. Everything we'd practiced for was being put to the test in this one moment. It all came down to this last lay-up. Did we get the point? When I was eleven years old I played recreational basketball with a nearby playground called Susan Park. Me and my little brother both were involved in almost every sport they offered. My favorites were volleyball and basketball. Going to practice was the highlight of my day. I really put my heart into these sports. Our basketball team this particular year was undefeated. As a post player and shooting guard there was a lot of pressure on me to get the ball to the goal at any cost and that's ultimately what I did in every game. It was our championship game and the heat was on like never before. Recruiters from the All-Stars team were there to watch us and pick their favorites so the pressure was definitely on for the players who were looking to take it to the next level. The game starts and we're all basically in the warm-up stage of the game we'd score, they'd score, nothing too intense. All of a sudden we start getting into the climax of the game, only about five minutes left. We were only two points away from beating them and it was up to one person on our team to step up and go for the game winning lay-up, that person was me. There were a few seconds left of the game and we still had to get up the court and to the goal. As the referee blew the whistle my heart sank but I knew what I had to do. The ball was passed to me and with no hesitation I ran down the court as if I was the only person out there and went up for the lay-up like a pro and I made it! This was definitely the best day of my life. The crowd rushed towards me and picked me up just like in the movies, I felt like a star! After the crowd and everything calmed down and came to an end a recruiter from the all-star…
