Generally speaking Creon is a prideful king. For example he made laws that defied the Gods. Creon is so prideful and arrogant he would not listen to others to spare the sister from being arrested. “I swear by God and by the throne of God, the man who has done this thing shall pay for it!.”,(pg 674) said Creon. He believed his law of not burying a traitor was
above what Gods said you should do when one dies. That the person who tried burying that body made Creon angry.
This leads to the reversal of fortune. Creon’s bad doings made these things happen. Creon looking away as Antigone kills herself and Haemon sees it and Haemon tries killing Creon but misses and kills himself then his wife sees it and kills herself. Creon is now alone he is guilty. If it werent for his condemnation of the sisters he wouldn't have so many deaths on his hands. This is the beginning of the Kings reversal of fortune. His pride and other things got in his way and his loved ones died.
Creon was once so strong and boastful but has now fallen from grace. Creon caused his great city to fall into chaos. “I tell you Creon, you yourself have brought this new calamity upon us.”( pg 697) said Creon was a pitiful man because his city was in ruins. Because of his pridefulness and spite he caused people to hate him.
Antigone was written by Sophocles. Creon is the tragic hero because he had excessive pride which eventually led to him to feel pity for himself. Creon ignored those around him who advised him not to arrest the sisters. He didn't listen to one of the wisest men because he thought himself the smartest of all the land, this led him to his demise. In the end the once powerful King Creon was reduced to an empty shell who wished for death.
