A person can become deceitful to make themselves look innocent and have others view them as victims. When in times of desperation, individuals will become dishonest and insincere. Tom walker becomes deceitful after being accused of taking money from innocent people for his own personal interests. This is accusation is denied by Tom claiming "the devil take me if I have made a farthing" (Irving 331), acting as if he were innocent and his life would be threatened if he collected greats amount amount and did not give it to the devil. This is an attempt to seek for pity from his clients, possibly alerting their view of him from greedy thief to victim. When John yells at Abigail for talking about Elizabeth, she quickly fires back with the accusation, " she is blackening my name in the village, she is telling lies about me, she is a cold sniveling woman" (Miller 1109). Truthfully Abigail has been spiteful towards Elizabeth and is responsible for creating conflict within their marriage. Her goal to destroy Abigail and John's relationship so she can have John, she continuously lies to him in the hopes that he will think of Elizabeth negatively after hearing this but he is wise enough to know that this is another one of Abigail's games. Both main characters are deceitful to change the outlook on themselves from negative to positive. In society these characters are guilty of lies but for different reasons, Tom lies to change the people's perception of him but also to protect himself.
