The purpose of this assignment was to be able to identify the concept of discourse community as introduced by John Swales in a fictional character. I do feel that my team and I accomplished the purpose of this assignment as we develop the required guidelines as they were asked such as the discourse community map and the activity system triangle. Our map was clear and we identified the three discourse communities each one of my teammates knew the content. As I learned indeed John Swales discourse communities may be used in my future career as a future lawyer I would be using more than one of the six characteristics that Swales defined such as lexis, common goals, intercommunication among its members, and feedback.…
Many people find the concept of a discourse community to be important enough to write about but many have failed to create a clear and universal definition. Three scholars: Porter, Swales, and Gee each attempt to create their own definition of the concept. Each of their articles has major differences in their interpretation of the notion of discourse communities while still having underlying similarities. The articles all build off the work of others while also introducing new ways of approaching and thinking about the ideology of discourse communities.…

During bowling almost any topic is welcomed such as current events, entertainment, and sporting events. Some of the more specialized topics would include lane conditions, bowling ball types, and the way a person is throwing the ball. During match play it is the goal of the team to figure out the lane conditions first so they can score higher than the other team. So this is a very popular topic among the better teams. Complaining about these lane…
The On-Site property manager is accountable for property operations, overseeing and enhancing the value of the property. Community Managers must embrace the concepts of Level 5 Leadership, Group Responsibility and Servant Leadership. The purpose for a property manager is to well manage and coordinate persons, activates, and available resources in order to accomplish community objectives as set forth by the Regional Property Manager and property owner. They must report their District/Regional Manager. Has a property manager you have to supervise the entire on-site staff (Assistant Community Manager/ Bookkeeper, Leasing Coordinator, Leasing Consultant, Community Service Supervisor/Assistant Community Service Supervisor, Service Technician, Make-Ready Technician, Groundskeeper, Painter, and Housekeeper.) This job has other responsibilities such as: meeting financial goals, leasing housing, administrating the property, resident retention, keeping up with maintenance, and making sure safety is enforced. A person in this occupation must conduct all business in accordance with TMI polices and procedures. I took a journey through my mother’s occupation as an On-Site Property Manager. She has been in this field for almost 5 years. I guess that would make her and old timer in her job. In order to be in this field all she had to have was a high diploma and a lot of people skills. She has to attend a yearly training program. That's good because the learning never stops in the occupation. Any person going into this field has to know the meaning of HUD (Housing Urban Development) and RD (Rural Development). You also have to read the Louisiana Fair Housing policies and procedures. My mother says she chose this field because it allows her to put her business management classes to good use. She enjoys her job because it gives her a chance to display her leadership qualities and she loves being in charge of a large group of people. When asked,” What advice would she give a new comer…

Discourses, using spoken or written language in a social context, are more than narratives of human existence. A contemporary feminist author and professor, Chris Weedon, paraphrases French philosopher, Michel Foucault in the following passage: (discourses are) “ways of constituting knowledge, together with the social practices, forms of subjectivity and power relations which inhere in such knowledges and relations between them. Discourses are more than ways of thinking and producing meaning. They constitute the 'nature ' of the body, unconscious and conscious mind and emotional life of the subjects they seek to govern” (Weedon, 1987, p. 108). This definition…

Learning about discourse community in writing is very essential because it helps students learn about their discourse communities. I learned a lot about the use of language in a discourse community. This essay has not only taught others about Pakistani community I have also learned new things about my community. This essay has also helped me move away from five-paragraph essay format. I have also read articles which described the discourse community the author entitled too. This essay has taught me how to describe my discourse community. One of the reasons I was able to understand this essay was the First Year Learning Goals. The First Year Learning Goals are very vivid in describing the discourse community. I did not know what the term “discourse community” means, but these goals helped me understand it effectively. This essay has taught me a lot in writing and reading about various discourse communities.…

The idea that discourse produces the objects of knowledge and that nothing which is meaningful exists outside discourse – we use the term discourse to emphasise the fact that every social configuration is meaningful. The concept of discourse isn’t about whether things exist but about where the meaning comes from.…
