To me, displacement means to be absent from comfort, relationships, belongings, beliefs, home and freedom. Often this displacement occurs when a person is forced to leave their home and subsequently lose their connections with where they belong, or their place. War, persecution, natural disasters or neglect are some of the reasons that someone might become displaced. In The Happiest Refugee, the author, Anh Do, expresses his experiences with displacement after his family flees Vietnam in search of refuge in Australia.…
Dream- a sequence of images, emotions, and thoughts passing through a sleeping persons mind. Dreams are notable for their hallucinatory imagery, discontinuities and incongruities, and for the dreamer’s delusional acceptance of the content and later difficulties remembering it.…
Amy Miller, in The Church of the Rowing Machine, demonstrates how human’s imagination enlarges one’s perception of a dream. As long as a dream guides a human being through the life, as long as this dream prevails and one believes that “[one’s] crewmates…are illusion and distance is illusion” that cannot stop him on his way, this human being will come close to catching or even will catch the dream (Miller 45). The reality of a dream does not truly matter since its driving force is the only thing that counts and leads a human being to the new…
Throughout history, humans have strived to understand the mystery and meaning of dreams. The interpretations of dreams widely vary throughout different cultures, however the majority of early societies viewed dreams as spiritual visions, forms of guidance, and sources of inspiration. Humankind’s fascination with dreams has led many scientists to develop theories on why they occur, however no theory has been proven thus far, therefore the exact science as to why they take place continues to be a mystery.…
They may recall an image or various images from the dream; however, they cannot describe how the images connected to encompass the dream (i.e., as one would tell a story). Alternately, they may describe vivid images, with powerful feelings associated with the image and experienced both in the dream and upon awakening (Marszalek, J., & Myers, J.,2006).” From the waking mind to what is left of the dream, a lot of extra information that makes it easier to interpret that dream through plausible explanations has been forgotten. However, the information that the brain has retained since waking can still be explained. Whether or not a dream fills a desire or highlights and magnifies certain stresses or worries from the day, all dreams can be interpreted to have a connection to one’s emotional state and experiences from past or present. If an individual is preoccupied with some emotion, over some dilemma or desire, his or her dream is likely to be focused on those emotions and distort experiences, while the brain compiles the imagery, emotion, and any stimulus into a gripping plot that reflects…

Displacement is the state in which you are not where you belong. The time, the place or with whom you are can greatly affect how you feel, given that humans seem to always lean towards their comfort zone. In The Awakening, a novella written by Kate Chopin, the protagonist, Edna Pontellier, is a displaced person in the Creole world. She feels uncomfortable and out-of-place amongst the Creole women on Grand Isle because of their different cultures. Edna also seems to be ahead of her time, as she submerges herself in an identity crisis, and a system of ideas new to the 19th century. The protagonist struggles with her displacement, causing her to act irrationally. She becomes daring and simply self-destructive. The novella proves to us that displacement takes a lot of courage to overcome. If one fails to conquer their displacement, overwhelming feelings may surface, and self-destructive actions may occur.…

Dream reveals the thoughts of the conscious which we are unaware of and it brings about understanding what the dream truly is and how to furthermore interpret it, which is why Freud developed a wonderful technique made for categorizing dreams. The technique Freud created is broken down into two sections which are the latent and manifest content.…
The process by which the latent content is transformed into the manifest content is known as the dream work. This explains that our brain naturally disguises our dreams and turns them into manifest content. According to Freud there are four main ways that our brain does this. They are condensation, displacement, symbolism and secondary revision. In condensation two or more latent thoughts are combined to make up one manifest dream image or situation. Displacement is used by directing the emotion or desire toward the intended person or…

Since the beginning of time, the interpretation of dreams has been used as a means to provide guidance for future actions or as warnings. Some dreams are so bizarre that they have often been ascribed to the soul having an out of body experience (Tedlock, 1987). While dreams are often defined as successions of random visual images, these images are only a complement to the feeling of being absorbed into a fantasy world in which things happen, actions are carried out, people are present, and emotions are felt, a mimicry of the sensation of being awake in every way. While elaborate, mystery still surrounds the meaningfulness of dreams and how they relate to humanity in this universe.…
