There are many different speculations over what dreams are and the purpose that they serve. In ancient time period dreams were seen as being able to predict the future, but in modern times dreams are conceived as a neurological occurrence. Information that we know of dreaming is that it is a natural part of mammal's life and are the one of the only species that can enter REM sleep. Yet, there is so much that is unknown about sleep and that still remains a mystery.
Dreams are can be described as "hallucinations of the sleeping mind", but discontinuities, incongruities, and dream acceptance and the remembrance of the dreams are significant parts toward dreaming. Dreams are known to be vivid, emotional, and bizarre. While,
day dreams in particular tend to revolve the details of a person life. REM, or rapid eye movement dreams are influenced by anything. REM sleep is the last stage and final goal of sleep. The discovery of a relationship between REM sleep and dreams is what jump started the research of dreams. The images, emotions and thoughts that pass through our minds while we sleep have many theories as to why they occur and where they originate from. There are four different dream theories, the one that I believe to be true is Freud's wish-fulfillment which includes dreams expressing unacceptable feelings, containing latent content, or a hidden meaning. I think most of my dreams fall into the category of latent content because most of them have an underlying message that is prevalent in my life. Although, I can see this as a reasonable explanation the theory is flawed because it lacks scientific support.
Dreams can tell you a lot about a person psychologically. For instance, they can express your personality, your motives, or your general thinking. I think that dreams fall into the spectrum of meaning great importance or they can be just a random thoughts in your mind. Most dreams basically revolve around your thoughts and imagination. People can interpret dreams as a serious matter and reflection of daily life or they can think it's something your brain imagined. This indicates that a person having dreams of failure or danger could be going through a difficult period in their life or a change in their life, the person could have positive and appealing dreams and that could represent them wanting to be content with their life. Dreams can reveal mental states of people an example being depression and other disorders. Lastly dreams could indicate nothing about a person, they can be totally unrelated to the who that person is and how they are.
In conclusion dreams are a necessity part of life. Whether it being relieving an issue in daily life or used as a creative outlet they provide us with information. I believe that dreams benefit us and can be a release for in times of need. Without dreams I feel like life would be a lot harder and less enjoyable. Dreams act as a source of entertainment, this entertainment something being vital to keep us continuing in our lives.
