Examples Of Fallacies In Advertising
To begin with, many advertisements use fallacies to promote their product. In a way, they make the mind of the consumer chose between their product over the competition. An example of an argument is in a 2012 Direct TV add the narrator says “When your cable company keeps you on hold, you get angry. When you get angry, you go blow off steam, when you go blow off steam, accidents happen. When you get an eye patch, people think you're tough. When people think you're tough, people want to see how tough. When people want to see how tough, you wake up in a roadside ditch. Don't wake up in a roadside ditch. Get rid of cable and upgrade to Direct TV" (DirectTV Ads). This is a fallacy as it is stating that if you are with a cable company, they will put you on hold, then you will get angry. After getting angry it will lead to all of these scenarios each affected by the previous. The end result is waking up in a ditch. The slippery slope fallacy is committed to persuade the consumer to switch to Direct TV. …show more content…
Premise 1: If you are put on hold by your cable company, you get angry. Premise 2: When you get angry, you go blow off steam, Premise 3: Accidents happen when you blow off steam. Premise 4: You will get an eyepatch from the accidents. Premise 5: People will think you’re tough if you have an eyepatch. Premise 6: If people think you’re tough they will want to fight you. Premise 7: If people fight you then you will get hurt. Therefore, the Conclusion of the argument is that “you wake up in a roadside ditch.” A slippery slope is a fallacy that happens when a writer begins with a sometimes-controversial subject and uses examples one after another to show what will happen if the subject is used. Also known as cause and effect. It follows the form of; if this happens, then this will happen and eventually this will happen. With the end result being undesirable.     The purpose of advertising is to market products and entice people to purchase what others are selling. According to The Merriam-Webster Dictionary (1974) the definition of advertise is, “1: inform, notify, 2: to call public attention to esp. (especially) in order to sell” (p.29).
