The concept of film form centers around the idea of effectively engaging an audience. Motion pictures that properly adhere to form are abundant in sensory, emotive, and thought-provoking elements. While form in any creative medium is made up of a vast number of different components, basic understanding can be met by following five general principles: function, similarity and repetition, difference and variation, development, and unity. In addition, this formal system categorizes a films ' elements as either narrative or stylistic. The film _Scott Pilgrim vs. the World_ is exemplary in its effective use of film form by not only involving its audience, but catering to each of the five principles of form.…
Point of View: note the shifting point of view and how the buildup of realism and dissatisfaction with the condition in which all of the major and minor character are living start to develop over time.…
In a very far away land, lived a man, a man with a very different life compared to you or me. He doesn’t know right from wrong. He sits by himself all alone, wondering what his purpose in life is. He’s always wondered what’s going on in the town below him. One day something very scary happened, a visitor came. He doesn’t know what to once he was exposed to the town. This is very usual in Tim Burton’s films. Tim Burton’s eerie style is best conveyed through his use of pan, establishing shot, and front/back lighting.…
One of the theories that is used based on the movie is the role theory. Role theory is refers to the individuals impress upon themselves personal and social expectations related to the myriad roles that they might hold (e.g., employee, parent, caretaker). Each social role is a set of rights, duties, expectations, norms and behaviours that a person has to face and fulfill everyday. In other words, an individual’s life is comprised of various roles across all work and life domains. However, the capacity and individual has regarding both psychological and physical resources are fixed in which each person has only a partial ability to fulfill certain life domains. As a result, the individual might faced role conflict. This is because if an…

The movie, Pay it Forward by Mimi Leder does not directly relate to being a Christian, more so it’s about the virtues of being a Christian. For example in the movie, Trevor, the main protagonist, showed fortitude, selflessness, and courage. This all starts on the first day of school for Trevor, when his social studies teacher Mr. Simonet gives an assignment to his students. The assignment was to change the world; Trevor took that assignment to the test.…
Functionalism is a macro theory, which is based on society as a whole, rather than just that of the individual. It is argued that functionalism generates many things for society. Religion, from a functionalist point of view, socialises people, teaching them norms and values of society, which are the basis for social unity. Religion further is a structure within functionalism which aids in influencing individuals lives. Functionalism claims that social solidarity, the uniting of people in society is an important part of maintaining social order, which is a functional pre-requisite for society to survive. In addition, Functionalists use the term, ‘Organic Analogy’, which is the comparison between society and the human body. The idea that like organs is a necessary condition in a human body, ensuring it functions correctly, society has different institutions, like religion which join up with others to enable society to work well, maintaining mutual agreement in society.…
All stories require certain features or components to serve a purpose (Angela Janovsky, 2017). The story element known as Characters is crucial for audiences to understand the plot as well as the authors motifs, also the relationships characters’ hold is also important to clarify a story. Furthermore, the protagonist in the Beauty and the Beast, Belle/Beauty, is similar in both the original text and film versions of the story. However, the relationships she has with the men in the tale do differ between the two versions. In addition, the relationship shared between Belle/Beauty and the Beast is…
For this assignment, I chose to watch and analyze the movie “Shawshank Redemption”. This movie is about a man, Andy Dufresne, who gets convicted of murdering his wife and her lover even though he claimed he was innocent of the crime. The movie takes place inside the prison where Dufresne is sentenced. In observing the movie, I used a functionalist mindset. Functionalist view society as a system in which all parts work together to create society as a whole. They see all societies as having important jobs and tasks that need to be carried out and those positions need to be filled by qualified people. Functionalists only focus on the function of society rather than focusing on the disfunction of the society. Along with this, they believe that…
The beliefs and feelings of a reader about certain characters or events in a story largely depend on who is telling the tale and how it is been told. Each story according to its theme, setting, characters, and plot development, requires a specific kind of narrative point of view. Assertion of each kind of point of view is going to have some advantages and disadvantages. However, the writer has to choose the most suitable one in which its advantages and benefits overcome the disadvantages. The point of view is a significant part in a story, and it plays an important role in the development of the story and the presentation of its characters.…
The narrative point of view clearly differs between the story and the film. The original text is expressed through the first person point of view. While reading the short story there is a sense that charlotte is speaking directly to the reader, leading to a complete understanding of her thoughts and actions. There is a more focused look into the main character. The other characters in the story are simply mentioned through charlottes own thoughts. The film however, is scripted through the third person point of view. The viewer receives a general knowledge on all characters. Unlike the short story, the viewer is not able to get into charlottes mind. This is just one example of the distinct differences between the story and film.…
Functionalism is a theory about the nature of mental states. According to functionalism, mental states are identified by what they do rather than by what they are made of. This can be understood by thinking about artifacts like mousetraps and keys. In particular, the original motivation for functionalism comes from the helpful comparison of minds with computers. But that is only an analogy. The main arguments for functionalism depend on showing that it is superior to its primary competitors: identity theory and behaviorism. Contrasted with behaviorism, functionalism retains the traditional idea that mental states are internal states of thinking creatures. Contrasted with identity theory, functionalism introduces the idea that mental states…
My favorite perspective in sociology was learning about the functionalist perspective aka functionalism. I do know that it is one of the major concept theories and perspectives in sociology. From class we learned about Emile Durkheim’s interest in this theory on how social order is possible on how society remains relatively stable through functionalism. “Functionalism does interpret every part of society on how it all contributes to the stability and the survival of society”. I guess the reason why I liked the study of functionalism is for the same reason why I like to be a functional person, I love for there to be order and I believe that everybody plays a role in that sense, either they know they are playing that part unknowingly or they do know and they are part of the order. I cannot stand for dysfunctional people especially when it can have a negative impact on a group or society. For example some of the TV shows out there like the Simpsons, family guy, two and a half men show our children how to grow up in such a family with the understanding that such a manner that being dysfunctional is normal but it’s not. Dysfunctional families carry it on to their kids and people they are around, this can be a direct result of their parents and may also be affected by addictions, such as substance abuse like drugs and alcohol. I have seen this all my life and it just kills me to be around it, not to mention everyone that knew who has been through it always make it out alive normal.…
Action films is one of the most popular type of movies. This genre are always favorite since they are different from others. They show us that life can be dangerous, dejected, bloody, and deadly or it can be magnificent, innocent, and normal. Action film is a genre where physical action takes priority in the storytelling. Unlike other genres, this variety has been one of the most dominant in the world of the film industry for his highly complex, as is the destruction of an entire city, catastrophic eventualities, massive explosions and a lot of violence above all. To develop this theme I will specify in the characters, contents and expectation.…
