Heritage music is an essential type of music to United States culture. This music carries a culture and history of other nations. In fact, this type of music is the foundation of many cultural groups. It allows individuals to identify with a particular group. It additionally, has elements that are deeply embedded in cultural history. This type of music keeps groups of individuals together, regardless of geographical boundaries. Klezmer and Irish Ceili music are two examples of heritage music.
Before discussing Klezmer and Irish Ceili as heritage music, it is important to understand the complexity of heritage music in general. Individuals that perform/identify with their heritage music have a mutual understanding that there is a shared history of where the music came from. There are many people who associate with the Irish that enjoy this form of music. Additionally, there are many people who identify as being Irish who Irish step dance. In my own life, I attended a party where four generations of those who were Irish did an Irish step dance at a party. This type of dance is something that many people identify with and enjoy. It is interesting to think that if it wasn’t for the revival brought by just a few individuals that this form of music may have died out and the music that I am used to hearing or seeing Irish people associate with would no longer be. When one hears this music, it is clear that it is music of Irish origin. Irish musicians also tend to incorporate more modern, American styles into their music.
