Examples Of How Santiago Treats The Marlin

Throughout this novella, one of the most profound themes is respect. Respect is something that the author wanted to make a big deal throughout the story. Some examples of respect is how the boy treats Santiago, how Santiago is treated as a fisherman, how Santiago treats the ocean and how Santiago treats the marlin. All these examples impacted Santiago and his decisions in the novella. The boy, Manolin, loves Santiago so much and truly respects him. Examples of this can be found throughout the novella but one of the most profound ones is when he finds the old man sleeping in his chair. “The boy took the old army blanket off the bed and spread it over the back of the chair and over the man’s shoulders.”(Hemingway 18). This little act of kindness truly shows how much Manolin loves Santiago. Another example of how Manolin respects and loves the old man is when he finally comes home from his battle with the marlin and the boy cries because of how bad Santiago looks and how defeated he is (Hemingway 126).
Santiago is treated poorly by his other fisherman because he has not caught a fish in eighty-four days. An example of how the old man was not respected by his fellow fisherman is “Many fishermen made fun of the old man… Others, of the older fisherman, looked at him and were sad.
