In “ Old Man and The Sea “ by Ernest Hemingway Santiago is a poor old man that survives in life by fishing. With his wife dead and him never having kids he is the only person left in his family. For 84 days in a row Santiago goes without catching a single fish. This is a man that works to feed himself and he is not catching anything. Santiago is a hero like character. With the extreme dedication to his craft and masterful patience the type of person that Santiago is, is who everyone else would like to model himself after. While most strive for money and material goods Santiago represents something more powerful and unique. In “ Old Man and the Sea “ Santiago is a common man that is motivated by keeping himself alive as fishing is his day job. He goes out daily and fishes to feed himself. While a feeble old man, he is also rugged and has much experience. With his wife dead and no kids he lives in a modest shaq by himself. His hands can tell many stories yet viewing him from afar does not show who he really is. Theo is a common man also and has a family : his child and his wife. On his journey to protect the future of this apocalyptic society toughness and relentlessness are two traits that he displays. Like Santiago he battles through his own struggles to complete a greater goal. With no hope in the world Theo wants to help stop the madness, and on a long journey he develops as a hero. Heroic traits that they share would be hopefulness, perseverance, and ruggedness. One of the major similarities between the two would be that both of them would die to accomplish their goals. With Santiago battling the Marlin for hours, then working to keep the sharks off of it he eventually just comes back with the carcass, and for Theo he gets the baby to safety, yet in the end dies because he got shot. Santiago is much older and lives a steady life in Cuba while Theo lives in an apocalyptic world that is crumbling around him. Their end goals are different, one is to save human life and the other is to catch a prized fish. Another difference is those around Santiago critique him. This is shown when the book talks about how the tourist is making fun of Santiago, also when Mannelin, Santiago’s apprentice, is not allowed to go fish with him anymore because Santiago has not caught any fish in 84 days. This shows that those around Santiago are very critical of him even though he has experience. While Theo is not judged by anyone because surrounding him is a war against the government. Refugees are trying to settle into the country while getting persecuted. His journey is internal and there is no microscope on
