Pablo Vicario Character Analysis
Pablo Vicario, twin brother of Pedro Vicario, plays a key role in “Chronicle of a Death Foretold”, for he is one of the murderers of Santiago Nasar. His sister, Angela Vicario, told Pablo and Pedro, on the night of her wedding, that Santiago Nasar had taken her virginity. The twins were now enraged and they both agreed that the honorable thing to do was to kill Santiago, as a woman losing her virginity before marriage was considered a disgrace. Pedro had originally concocted the idea of murdering him, but after Colonel Don Lazaro Aponte took away the knives, Pedro thought it was best to not go through with the killing; however, Pablo insisted on continuing. The twins finally proceeded with the killing by stabbing Santiago several times, causing a hemorrhage and exposing his internal organs. Pablo Vicario was a man who honored and respected his culture, even if it meant committing the drastic, contemptible crime of taking a man’s life. On the night of Angela Vicario and Bayardo San Roman’s wedding, Pablo Vicario was wearing a dark wedding suit, and he was still wearing this outfit while performing the killing. Right before he is to be shot, Pablo was then interrogated one last time on the whereabouts of his friend Ramon. Pablo is ready to die before betraying his friend but decides to lie instead.
