In the novel things fall apart the new Christian religion makes Okonkwo feel that his identity will be threatened. It took his pride and made him feel as some of his characteristics were not superior as he thought they were. He is unable to adjust to the newcomers leads to his downfall. This example explains the way Colonization can have affects on its victims. Okonkwo felt as if he had loss what he has earned in his village. The British colonizing in his village made him feel, as he was weak and helpless as his father. Okonkwo’s biggest desire was to be nothing like his father. This started to make him feel uneasy , especially since he was just returning to his village.
Okonkwo son also made him feel as if he was a failure.
He already believed that his son was feminine and he was a disgrace to his village. In the Novel Things Fall Apart, His cousins tells okonkwo about his son being around the christians and Okonkwo nearly killed his own son. it made him furious that his son, someone of his blood would disgrace his own village for a new belief.
Okonkwo felt as if his village was weak. He became more and more passive as he seen his fellow villagers let the christians take over and they do nothing. When him and a group of other villagers went to burn down the church he felt as if their was hope. Then their was a village conference when they hashed over war, Okonkwo killed one of the District commissioners. His village did not rise up into war but seemed worried which drives him to commit suicide.
Okonkwo couldn’t handle the christians colonizing in their territory. He couldn’t stand letting someone else coming in and taking over. He symbolized power and pride and he couldn’t live on to see his village fall apart, So he just ended it all himself because he couldn’t let anyone else tear him apart.
